The Front Porch Swing

Sounds like a great project to undertake. I've been surfing the web for DIY 'bators but haven't attempted anything as yet. Sure would be nice to see it work out for you and just exactly how you went about it.

Keep us posted and good luck !

This one is going to require a good bit of faith, so I'm not sure how many will want to follow this, even if it's successful. I'm working on the fact that eggs hatched in a natural setting have wide variables in heat/cold and humidity outside the nest, but trying to stabilize those factors inside the nest without the abilities of a broody are going to be the challenge. She can change the heat levels on her brood patch within seconds in reaction to a cold stimulus and we can't even hope to mimic that....but I'm hoping to try.

I'm going to try to the best of my ability and then I'm going to leave the rest up to God and see what happens.

With His guidance and a little faith, I bet it will work out !

That's how I do everything with chickens and it always works out. I'm a little leery about playing with the lives of little chicks to test this theory and will feel pretty badly if it all goes south, but I'll never know if I don't try.

Good evening from the hilltops of south PA. Hope everyone is warm and cozy.
Can't wait for spring had enough of this stuff.

Think the chooks have too. This is as far as they would go out today.

Bee looking forward to your incubator project. Sally Sunshine has a pretty neat coolerbator set up.

I talked to Sally before starting this DIY project..she has a lot of info. Fred directed me to some good vids too. Unfortunately, the thing I'm doing is nothing like I've seen anywhere before and has its own set of challenges....you'll see what I'm talking about when I get the pics of it up. It will be something different....I'm always doing something different than most folks.

My chickens walked down through the crusty snow and in the middle of a snow shower to stand by the back porch and let me know that poor, starving, freezing chickens were suffering out in the bitter cold because I had not fed them yet.

Even Fat Cochin was out in the snow...acted like he was walking on hot coals all the while. He's one sissified rooster, that's for sure.

I ate asparagus for the very first time today. I rather liked it!  Tasted a little like sweet corn.  :)

Yay! What took you so long? How was it prepared? I used to have a patch of it here, but the RoundUp fairy found it.

Our pork ribs were pretty good! Dad said they were the best ribs he'd ever eaten ... he eats ribs a lot more often than I do, so we'll go with his opinion.

Wow! You must be a good cook to please the Dad. My dad would never admit my cooking was good and would act like he was eating poop if he had to eat it. He didn't like me so that was his way of trying to hurt my feelings. It didn't work.

It was steamed and was in some kind of nice sauce...it was at a Chinese place. That's just not a veggie we ever had when I was growing up...we planted veggies that were big and could be canned up, provide a lot of food for a lot of people. Big family and all.

And a fire pit! BC, you are so very thoughty...practical as always. Yes, stoke up that fire, the old bones are chilling tonight....

God laid down a perfectly good cherry tree in the yard this summer and I'll use that on the fire. That tree was HUGE and it was killed by carpenter ants...I was here when it fell and it was very odd. I saw these leaves shaking and there wasn't any wind, then I heard a huge CRACK. Then a little while later I heard more cracking and more leaves shaking. Still no wind or anything, just a calm, clear day. Then all the sudden it started to lean, crack and quiver and then slowly it fell to the ground. We've been using that cherry wood and mixing it with our other wood all winter long, it was that big! Burns hot and long with hardly any smoke, so it should keep this porch WARM.
oh how cool Bee on that tree!

I been missing out big time here! Didn't even know you made this thread and I am checking in from good ole Miss sip Pee. lol Mississippi.....

Yeesh. I'm sorry about your dad. That's not cool. :( Why do people have kids if they can't be bothered to like them?

My Dad really likes being fed so he over compliments my food. It's unnerving. But it's also convenient cuz I like to experiment and try new things.

I quite like asparagus and it comes up early then is pretty for the rest of the year and is permanent, making it a nice addition to a garden. I like to mix it with olive oil and balsamic vinegar and grill it. It is also great in creamy soup.
