The Front Porch Swing

Wow! Such a cool story. To read.

I can't imagine it would have been easy to live that way, but I could probably question you for a lifetime to learn more and more about what it was like to just "be you."

It's all in how you approach it. I was and am a very laid back, content person and I don't chafe at restraints and authority like most because I was raised under an authoritarian father. My brothers and sisters really hated moving there and working that place, but I can truly say, though it was uncomfortable in a lot of ways, it was the most educational and significant part of my life. It fashioned who I became later by showing me what a person can do without if they really have to, what hard work can build, and how to get along with people in tight living conditions~or else. It really spawned in me a love for a minimalist and spartan kind of life as I can see the true beauty and efficiency of it and everyone else just thinks it shows a lack of money.

It was a turning point in how I saw life and it made me tougher than most of my peers and that has lingered to this day~I can't seem to foster up any sympathy for folks who complain a lot. I seem to live outside of the general perspective on life and what is the norm and so cannot really relate to how the other 99.9% of people live nowadays, but can relate immediately to how the old country folks lived back in the day. I can live without things that others cannot seem to live without and I'm truly happy doing so, though others would look at my life and think me deprived. It's sort of funny, because I look at them and think, "Man, I would hate to live their life!".

Morning all, looks like Montana outside. We were thrilled to find power on this morning, it's out across town. But then it went off at 9 am , but only for an hour. Hope it lasts. I kept telling the guys to store water for when the pump goes off. So I saved about 10 gal. Now I'm vindicated. Aimee went to fill her tub the second it came back on.

Well... it has started! All the chickens have huddled under the coop and tarp. Sydney has abandoned the chickens for an old barrel and towel on the porch! I've been down already to knock the snow off the tarp and refresh the water. I am praying that Hubby makes it home ok.... I don't worry about his driving, but I do worry about all the other people who have no clue how to drive in this weather! A couple of weeks ago we just barely got an inch and there were 2 fatal car accidents in the county within 4 hours. When I was as little as my kids are, this was a normal weekly occurrence during the winter, but things have changed and we very rarely get any real accumulation! Please keep all those who are out in this mess in your prayers that they get home safe and sound!

Will do!!

If you ever get tired of Sydney, I'd love to have him....he's about the cutest cat ever! I love that pic...belongs in a magazine. I love the pic of your coops in the snow too...very rustic looking.

I know what you mean about how folks drive...they do that here too at the beginning of each winter, as if they had forgotten how to drive in the snow since last winter. It's a puzzlement.

The flock were out all day trying to glean forage in any small area that doesn't have snow. It's been a damp 14 degrees today but they were all out all day, even Fat Cochin, though he doesn't know how to scratch for food.

This state, though not my area, are supposed to get a quick, big snow storm today and tomorrow and I've heard you folks down south are getting some of the white powder too. I hope everyone keeps their power and stays safe on the roads...I know the south isn't really equipped for keeping roads clear, so don't go places if you don't have to. That's something that always puzzles me in these parts....bad snow storms seem to be some kind of signal for every 2 WD family car to be loaded up with the kids and go to town to see a movie or shop. It's mystifying.

Aww.. I think I will just keep her! She has been in the family since she was a kitten, but has moved around from my dad's to my mom's to my sister's and we have had her for about 5 years now.... She is around 12-13 years old..... I tried keeping her in the house when I first got her, but her health deteriorated... she lost a ton of weight, dropped fur like crazy to the point of bald spots, started throwing up and couldn't manage her bladder.... I couldn't handle all the "messes" and "accidents" so I put her back outside.... She got better, and you can't tell anything was ever wrong with her! Just goes to show that you can't baby every critter!

Some cats cannot live on cat food only but need the nutrients from wild game to keep their kidneys healthy...sounds like that's what she was dealing with. Most would tell you to put her on a low ash diet but all a cat really needs is their natural diet to stay healthy. I had a cat like that once that someone gave me, said it had to have low ash feed because of its kidneys...I put it outside and it lived a long and healthy life without low ash feed, got healthier and its coat just glowed.

Had another that was an indoor/outdoor cat that someone gave me and we kept him indoors for too long one winter...he started losing weight, coat got dull, and peeing blood, so I put him out and wouldn't let him back in until he had corrected his condition~which he did soon enough~and then we never made that mistake again. No more inside cats...just only visits of an evening or morning of brief duration to be with the family.

Eggs of the Day Photo #1 ...

On the left is a cool speckled brown egg with a "regular" brown egg for contrast. On the right a cool speckled green egg with a "regular" blue egg for contrast. The towel is white.

I love my job.
