Lindz, beautiful children! I hope today they are feeling better. I understand about the eyes also. I would tell my husband the kids have 'sick eyes'. He would go, 'WHAT?'

I think so too...at least, I'm planning for it.

I'm getting ready for rain, so to speak. Temps held steady at 100* even all night long..checked 4 times in the night and again this morning..that thermometer didn't MOVE.

I'd think if you pass the first night test, it should be good from here. At least you're not having baked eggs for breakfast!

Had a big ol' omelet for breakfast!

I think, after a few days, I'll be able to trust the routines and the temps without checking so frequently for a resume to normal after adaptations or turning.

When I leave I'll be taking the box out of the windowsill and placing it in a chair next to the window that has deep cushioning from the cold and will see how it does there. The house temps will be dropping to around 30-40 while we are gone and possibly lower, so it could be problematic...I'll have to trust the nest at that point, to maintain proper temps.

Since we are supposed to be getting quite a bit of snow today and tomorrow, I wanted to make some adjustments to the coop... I hung a tarp from the back of the coop where the chicken door is so that the chickens would have a little bit more of an area that is relatively snow free..... I know I will have to go down there every so often to take water and knock the snow off the tarp, but at least they will have some room to move around. While I was trying to fix the tarp, I managed to hit my frozen finger with my husband's huge framing hammer! I couldn't find my smaller hammer, so I used his, which is really too heavy for me.... My finger is throbbing and turning a little purple. I really wanted to cry after I came back in and my hands started warming back up! I did manage to get some decent pictures while I was out there though! There are alot....I love sharing pictures, but if you all don't want me to, let me know and I will quit!

Morning all, looks like Montana outside. We were thrilled to find power on this morning, it's out across town. But then it went off at 9 am , but only for an hour. Hope it lasts. I kept telling the guys to store water for when the pump goes off. So I saved about 10 gal. Now I'm vindicated. Aimee went to fill her tub the second it came back on.

Our little diva white poodle mix dog Angel looked at her mama and said "You want me to do what? (on the snow) Brought her back in and put down a towel.

OUCH! Soak that in warm epsom salts and put some castor oil on it...will take care of that throbbing pain. I think Sydney is a sweety and your chickens are beautiful! If you get any heavy snows I'm doubting your tarp will hold or it may break down under the weight, but you've already figured that. This winter has been a testing time for many when it comes to their coop and run systems and I'm thinking many of us will be making big changes come spring to try and prepare for next winter.

My middle guy just goes and then collapses. I can't count the number of times we are in the middle of dinner and he just curls up on his chair and Poof (last night was one)! That and the toilet seem to be his favourite places!

I always insisted on daily naps for mine and they were glad to get them. Daily naps and early bed times will keep a kid well rested for all kinds of activities, though sometimes they would still lose steam after a particularly long and busy day and collapse in a heap before bed time.

We have had a pretty mild winter for the most part, just really cold. This will be the first "major" snow we have had in several years.... I tried to slope the tarp, so maybe part of the snow will slide off. If not I'll go down every hour or so and knock the snow off. We will just have to see how everything works out.... I wish I had the other building ready for the chickens and I wouldn't worry about it much. Right now, my coop is 5x8, and they have a pretty good sized run and can get under the coop... Plus if I am home, I leave the gate to the run open, and they free range on roughly 2 of our 6 acres. When I get the other building ready for them they will have roughly a 8x12 coop with the same run, ect.

My little ones take a nap after lunch on MOST days... If the 3 year old doesn't take one, she always falls asleep at the table. Unfortunately, she also tends to stay up later at night than the others. She also ends up in our bed usually around 2:00 in the morning. My mom fusses because I usually make everyone go to bed around 8:00. But if not, they are bears the next day... the 3 year old is usually up until 10 or 11, because I can't ever seem to be able to get her settled down and asleep before then... It can be very exhausting with her!
