Ahhhhhhh dog problems - or no, dog owner problems!!! I am on the verge of the same thing here - yet again! A whole lot of people are just plain and simple IDIOTS. For somebody to think that you should pen your animals in one little section of YOUR LAND while their dog has free run of the rest of YOUR LAND - how stupid! That makes me so mad! I tell ya what, as Bee said, there are three possible solutions: 1) you talk to the owner and they fix the problem (hardly ever happens). 2) You kill the dogs. 3) Get a dog(s) that will take care of stray dogs. I am soooo tired of dealing with idiot dog owners and I hate to kill a dog so I plan on going with #3. Until then I am going to fire those dogs butts up and hope they will stay away, if not they will die. No more talking to neighbors who don't get it. If you do try to talk to them there's a good chance you end up fighting with them. And if anything happens to their dog YOU are to blame because YOU were the one who complained about their dog.

Since Jake is too dog friendly, I or one of the family(my mother or son, whoever is handy)have to shoot the dogs around here. We learned years and years ago that you simply cannot reason with the type of people who feel like their dogs should run the world. I've went to extraordinary lengths to preserve the dog's life and return them to the owner, encourage the owner to keep them home, even bought items to help them keep the animal at home.

Never again. Now this is a dead end mailbox, no returning to the sender. It's better for the dog, for the neighbor and for our animals if it's just ended in one shot and disposed of on the property. When their dogs disappear, they can pretend it ran off or something noble like it got killed by a coyote and then they can get more and they will either keep these at home or they will once again let them run. And then those disappear and pretty soon they just give up on getting anything other than house dogs that they let out to go potty.

Then everyone is happy.

Those pictures are all you need for proof. Call animal control show them the pictures and send them over to talk to the neighbors.

Take pictures every time. Call animal control every time. If there is a leash law animal control HAS to do domething about the dogs whether they damage property or not.

Oh how I agree on all of this! I just got off the phone with Animal control and they are going to go back out there today. This will be twice, although the first time, no one was home and they just left a note. I am definitely getting tired of it. I am also looking at G.Pyr. puppies online... there are several people pretty close that raise them... But like Bee said earlier... it would be awhile before they were old enough to guard! I am thinking that also, the heeler is going to have to start staying outside so maybe we have at least a little defense, but even he is still very young, and won't be able to do much.... Looks like a .22 is going to be in my near future....

Lindz, have you considered 'salting' the dogs? (putting rock salt in a shotgun shell)

I've learned that when folks do that around here it just makes the dog very wary of humans and doors opening on houses and so they run like they've been shot when a human comes out of the house.....but that didn't keep them from visiting the coop in the first place. So, what is created is a predator that sneaks around while you are not around and does the same damage but one which you cannot get in a gun sight because it's been shot at and hurt before.

The last one we had like that, we had to sneak a window up quietly and shoot it from the house without opening a door.

The only other thing you can do is invest in electric poultry netting and keep it juiced up around your coops.

Unfortunately if you "salt" the dog and the owner can prove it you can be charged with animal cruelty.......

The bad thing is IF you even try to talk to a lot of those people then it is "all out war" as one neighbor told me. Pfffft! lol It is a sad thing but you and your animals are better off just to kill the dog or get a dog that will kill the dog or sometimes if the dog goes home with a real good dose of buckshot (or a t-total butt whipping from your dog) it will stay away. Electic fence is always good but that can run into money if you have much to fence.

That's funny. I was trying to get a different internet service a couple of weeks ago and tried a local cable company that offered internet as well - pretty cheaply. So the guy kept trying to set me up with an HDTV package before he would even talk to me about the internet. Wouldn't even tell me how much internet was if I bought the TV package. I kept telling him we don't watch TV. The only thing we do is watch VCR/DVD movies. We read. Really, we don't watch it! - He just couldn't comprehend it. I finally said goodbye without ever finding out how much the internet package would be if we did get TV. It just sucks your brain out anyway. We live in an area that can only use wireless/satellite - no cable lines run out here. We did finally settle on a satellite company, but the hoops to jump through just to do research were incredible.

We have a similar situation here. We are actually quite suburban, really, I can see the lights of Portland from the house, though we are about 4 miles from any public transportation or McDonalds.

So we're "roughing it."

Our property is located in a "Farm Zone" but surrounded by low-density residential lots. There is a 1 mile gap in the upgraded phone/cable wires from the official companies, and we're right in the middle of the gap. I used to call the phone company all the time, and each time I was assured I was mistaken, that they had wired "everything" ... then there is a pause, and an "Oh, wow. We haven't wired you ... and we're never going to ... unless you pay for it yourself." Maybe three times I've asked for an "estimate" of how much it would cost to bring the wire either up the hill or down it, and the figures have been laughable, 10s of thousands of dollars ... though I think the first quote was 100s of thousands of dollars.

We need internet for our business. Interesting how some of the farm services certifications, etc., are Internet Only now, but nobody thought to "wire" the farms. Big Double Dumb Duh government at work typicalness. This is why we need to elect more women.

For a VERY long time we hobbled along AOL dial-up. Then we had the service provided through Dish TV ... and it sucked maybe a little more than the Dish TV itself. ANY kind of weather and we were without either TV or Internet, and that was okay until they stopped doing old-fashined TV broadcasts. We never bought the converter boxes because I am the one who organizes these things and I don't watch TV myself, so it just didn't get done. We still have Dish TV, though not in my part of the house.

Now there is a new service where they can "bundle" two phone lines together and use that for a high-speed connection. It works really well and is fast enough that I don't complain constantly. It is also less expensive than the satellite, and we don't go over our monthly allotment of service. I use it in my part of the house to watch stuff on Netflix and do Internet stuff. The service is fast enough for regular Netflix, but not fast enough for the 3D movies ... though that might be the house WiFi and not the service itself. I don't care enough to research that, but I should. I use 3D movies for vision therapy ...

Over the years, a couple of other farms in the neighborhood (vineyards, actually) have bonded with us regarding research and phone calls and trying to pressure the phone/cable company to upgrade our area. We've all switched to this new bonded phone-line service. It's nice to have other people helping with the complaining and the research.

I think if I am going to shoot the dogs, it will be lethal. I don't like the idea of hurting them, when it most likely won't solve the problem. My mom's boyfriend is bringing me a .22 tomorrow and we are going to shoot some. I have been around guns my entire life, but never really shot any. My sister was a better shot, so my dad didn't "waste time showing me how".... but that's a whole different story.
