The Front Porch Swing

Hello everyone!

Hi Chicken boy.... Whacha up to.

Thats a pretty Bunny in you Avatar.... I am not a rabbit person I admire them but would rather pet than handle....

I've got one great friend from college who insists I don't have to pretend to be fun around her. She also doesn't have any kids, and only has a Dad left, and loves cats and Thai food, movies & popcorn. She tolerates the chicken talk by pretending I'm talking about more cats, I think. Everyone else gets annoyed that I don't like to go out spending money or acting silly.

I do like to travel. If I'm not making my own fun at home, I find a country to go explore.

I can make a lot of fun at home, though. I'm not sure some people understand that.
There is one singular country I would like to vist.... Australia. I had an OBE once to a place I found out years later was called Sandy Island... would love to visit there. i would love to stand in the same spot...

or left the car unlocked with the keys in the ignition.... It all doesnt matter. I was distracted and made grievous errors. The police even asked if I had any friends that might try to Punk me.... scuse me?

I just about sobbed when i told them I had no friends. I am 59 My last job let me go.... The friends I knew were there. I rarely socialize outside of work. The only "peeple" I have are My Son, My Mom, and My Grandma.

I'm like you Deb. I only have my two kids, my husband, and my chickens. The chickens don't give much back except the joy I get just from having, watching and caring for them. My kiddos are getting ready to leave the nest though and I'm a little bit afraid of what's gonna happen in my head when they do. I know that having your kids as your only friends is dangerous but I'm just not very outgoing. Most people (I think) aren't much into chickens and I just don't have many things to talk about where I know what I'm talking about.

I too have developed one friendship on BYC that I would hate to lose. He's on the other side of the country and we don't see eye to eye on everything but I guess we kind of put up with and try to help each other out quite a bit. I'll probably never meet him but that's ok.

I think the "no friends" thing is getting more common. Move, get sick, change jobs, kids graduate, break up ... each of those things wipes out an entire social structure. It's even harder on people who don't like to go out drinking.

Amen!

Exactly! Life happens and things change! In my case I think my kids overwhelm people. They are great kids, and very well mannered, but with 4 of them age 7 and under things can get chaotic very quickly! Even our family doesn't come around very often, so most of the time it is just us. I wasn't ever a big social person anyway, but I am becoming quite the homebody!

I'm the same way.

I would love to visit Australia! After reading a book by Bill Bryson I kept shaking my head and wondering why more people weren't going there. Everything from extinct ants to prehistoric sponge-thingies to, well, the most painful ways to die if bitten by a spider or a snake or a jellyfish ... but aside from all that, there are some Really exotic and interesting places to visit. A walk through a boardwalk at treetop level.

Not quite a pot roast, but I make this in the crockpot and it uses a chuck roast.
One of my favorite things for supper:
BBQ Shredded Beef
4 lb beef chuck pot roast
2 large onions chopped
1 c ketchup
1 c beef broth
2/3 c chili sauce
1/4 c cider vinegar
1/4 c brown sugar
3 tbs Worcestershire sauce
2 tbs mustard
2 tbs molasses
2 tbs lemon juice
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1/8 tsp pepper
- heat a heavy dutch oven on high with 1 tbls oil, brown beef roast on all sides, place roast in crockpot.
- turn heat down to medium, cook onions in dutch oven until slightly opaque. Add rest of ingredients and mix well, scraping up all the browned beef bits from the bottom of the pan. Pour over roast. Cook on low for 8 hours or till beef is falling apart.
- remove beef roast and shred with a fork. Put back into sauce and stir well. Serve on hard rolls.

Welcome to the new-comers!

I would like to vacation in New Zealand, with maybe a side trip to Australia.
But, I would like to visit Ireland even more.
Before leaving the states for a vacation, I think I would like to see more of the good ole USA. I have been to Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Ohio, Michigan (upper and lower), Wyoming, Colorado, and Idaho, and followed interstates across Nebraska, South Dakota, Utah and Nevada to Northern California. I have seen the ocean once at Trinidad, CA and never even got my feet wet.

Did meet one very wonderful friend right here on BYC and now she's my bestie! I've never spoken to her on the phone nor have I even met her but she has been more of a friend to me than any physical friend I've had since grade school. We talk via email and on here and through snail mail. Her screen name is Loveigee and I met her on the Road Less Traveled thread....she is a keeper!
