The Front Porch Swing

Buying chicken in the grocery store, they don't remove those do they?

No they don't bother removing those. They seem to have a machine to remove everything except that and the fat. Like Bee said, every little thing adds up to weight which adds up to more money.

@Bee... I'm sure your right but their just sorta ugly. lol

I know...they are so much uglier than a liver or a heart.

Poor things. I don't think they get enough positive press and have decided to be their new spokesperson so that the world will stop discriminating against the ugly chicken parts. They have flavor too and don't deserve this awful discrimination and hatred.

I'm even thinking of having a one million kidney march on the capital to protest this...anyone having chicken kidneys they would like to donate for this tribute to this poorly treated organ group, please send them~fresh, mind you~to my address so that I can properly organize them for the protest.

I say go for it!!! You can borrow my couch to sleep it off. LOL Butternut squash sounds better to me than pumpkin anyhow. I've got to go back and write your custard recipe down. I bought a journal type thingie just to write recipes in. I also need to start keeping a notebook handy just to jot down valuable info when reading this and the FF thread. I can't ever go back and find what I want!

I know what you mean ... the search feature on this website isn't great. I usually have more luck going back out to google to search, and then it takes me to the right spot over here. I also have trouble finding just the thing I knew I saw before out there in the rest of the Internets, too. And I can become distracted puppy-like with all the flashy shiny stuff out there and forget what I was doing ... Mmmmm. Oh look! Custard!

Yeah, sure.

It is wickedly cold and windy here today and some snow flurries have started but don't look serious. This is the kind of day that sucks the heat from a house and from under a bird, though all mine seem impervious to the cold and are out pecking around. Silly birds.

Fanny is still isolating herself but I couldn't catch her to do the dirty deed and it was too cold to even try harder...she's moving along real well, comb and wattles nice and red, breast full and shiny. The first rule of livestock maintenance...if the "sick" animal you are wanting to treat or kill is too active for you to catch, you might want to just hold off and see who they manage. Could be they are not doing as badly as you would think.

Doesn't that yellow oil coming out of the oil gland when you mash it real hard remind you of icing that they write on cakes with? Yuck! lol
I don't think the oil is supposed to get dry like that. I don't know... and I try real hard not to associate bodily functions with the way food looks. My husband is guilty of that and WILL NOT eat mayonnaise for that very reason. Except of course in tuna fish!

Thank you Bee. I needed a laugh this morning. Between you and our custard addict, I'm ready to go.

Got any extra custard there Leslie? By the way, I think it would work great with a butternut squash. They're both winter squash so I'd say go for it.

Whaaa?

I'm serious here.....think of how very lonely and despised all those chicken kidneys are and I could give them a loving home and advocate for them. All of them. All of the tasty and ugly kidneys of the chicken world could have someone to love them.

If only kidneys weren't such a PITA to get out of the bird during processing. I have been known to suck the "kidney pâté " out of the backbone a time or two myself. It is very satisfying. But it isn't very delicate. The organs have so many nutrients, I'm sure there is a reason some of us crave them.

So BK ... I know you're into chicken feet broth, but have you ever used the heads? I haven't been able to bring myself to do that. Yet.

I've got two batches of beef bones on their third pass through my crock pots. I'm going to learn to make Pho (Vietnamese soup), but instead of following the official recipe for the broth base, I'm going to be using bone broths. The second and third passes through the crock pots the bones offer up a clearer broth ... I'm thinking that's a great place to start when making Pho.

Anyone want my recipe for Puerto Rican Green Banana Salad ... which is traditionally served with chicken gizzards?
