The Front Porch Swing

Stick to your guns!!! The dog run is a good offer. But, he will decide sooner or later that all of this has blown over and open the gate to let them run........Same thing will happen again.

The law is on YOUR side and he knows it. That is why he keeps calling and harrassing you.

Got a phone call from the boyfriend of the woman whose dogs killed my chickens. He couldn't understand why we called animal control! Why couldn't we just be "neighborly". Well when it happened I offered to help them build a run for the dogs and she wasn't interested. After all, we live in the country and they should be able to run.Thats when I got animal control involved. He called me 3 times this afternoon screaming about going to court and getting the law involved. My husband called him back and again offered to help him build a run for the dogs. We told him if they built the run and kept the dogs in we would not ask for compensation for the 11chickens we lost. He couldn't quite get that there is a containment law here. We will see what happens. Sorry, I just needed to vent.

Sounds like my neighbor! They told me that I needed to build a pen for my chickens and clip their wings so they couldn't get out, so that their dogs could have run of my property. HAHA... Not going to happen!

What did animal control propose they would do? Should tell the fellow that you'd love to go to court...because not only will they have to pay for the chickens, they will pay court costs and any attorney fees you incur from the episode.

Lessons learned out here in the country....SSS is about the only way to resolve these sort of things where there is no confrontation and ugly problems afterward. The dogs just disappear and any other dogs they get just keep disappearing. Pretty soon, if they want to keep their dogs they keep REAL close tabs on them, even when they let them out to go potty.

That's the way to do it! Dad doesn't want me bring home anymore chicks, so I buy them without him knowing, hehe! He doesn't even peek into the brooder box, so it would take him weeks if not months to know for sure, mwahahahaha! <--- That's my maniacal laughter.

A couple months pass and he asks when I got that nice looking chicken...and I just pretend I didn't hear him. :lau

"What chicken??oh the one that lays the eggs you eat every day?? Why she's been around forreevveerrrr. Geez dad, you're getting old!"

You have my sympathy having to deal with neighbors like that. How is letting animals run everywhere unsupervised kinder than keeping them safe and sound at home? And we haven't gotten to the part about the chicken killing.

I hope you set the stage so you can report him for harassing you, too.

When I went yo court Animal Control pressed all the charges. I simply showed up with my notes on all of the dates of events, dogs involved, discussions with animal control officers, proof of value of chickens and dated pictures of damages and videos of dogs on my property.

I won 4 cases by having evidence of damages and proof of value of chickens. I managed to remove a dozen or more dangrous dogs from the neighborhood. I made a lot of decent neighbors very happy. But I made a lot of not very decent folks pretty mad.

Good job!

If a person breeds, hatches and raises their own birds, how would one go about declaring their value and proving it?

Had a cuckoo marans rooster killed by the neighbors dog. I hatched him from shipped eggs. $60 for 14 eggs and shipping. $30 for feed to raise him and his hatchmates. I had a list of people who wanted hatching eggs. The judge ruled for the cost of the eggs the cost of the feed and two dozen hatching eggs. Total ruling $125 for me plus court costs and the dog be put to sleep.

This was the second time we went to court for this dog.

I didn't know enough to be prepared the first time. So the owners were sternly disciplined by the judge and had to pay court costs. The owners had already paid a fee to get the dog out of the pound.

Update:  I am down to one hen, Lena.  DH is going to put Droopy down when  he gets home.  She wasn't eating today, just sitting.  I picked her up (which is unusual) and had her on my lap.  Her head was under my jacket for a bit.  I noticed little flecks of blood on my coat.  I put her down and then I noticed my shirt was red.  When I checked her over she looked fine...no feathers missing or anything.

Oh dang. I'm sorry to hear that. You're kinda in a quandary...should you get more chickens if the dogs might come back??
