I couldn't handle 140 chicks for real either! But it felt like that many when an epidemic of pasty butt swept through my brooder of 14! While I was washing and oiling little butts, I kept wondering, "If I only bought 14, why does it feel like I'm washing hundreds of butts?" Never ending chore! <sigh>Stories are great!!!! Don't worry! My jaw just sortof dropped and I said "no time to read all that and catch up, let alone remember some of it!"""
Flower duct tape is a good idea! I think paint will work, though. Tape has the possibility of being removed, especially with busy little fingers around) and DH already has a bunch of his tools spray painted green. I could spray paint pink, but then I wouldn't be able to use them. I think I'm allergic to that color!!!
UhOh... 140 chicks? How do you deal with the extra eggs? I think DH might murder me. He's already asking how we are supposed to go on holiday with chickens to take care of...
Um, yeah.
And here are a few photos:

Needs a little fixing up... for the kids!

The barn - needs a little roof fixin for a barn, or could be converted to another residence.

Big!!! Lots to clean up!...
But on 7.5 acres, with trees 100' high. Hasn't been used as a farm for a while (20+ years), and the current people haven't done much in terms of fixing up, but the place has been kept clean. Needs a bunch of minor work which we are handy with so should just take a little time.
The fields have grown in to 6-10" red alders which will make some handy fire wood.... Maybe we can use some pigs to help clear?
I'm giddy with excitement. I want to go get my hands dirty!

Quote: You have to Grow what thrives.... where you are. My list may never get filled.... Unless I get help. The desert stuff already grows here With the exception of Prickly pear. I would love berries of some sort. Doesnt get cold enough in the winter for them. except one or two varieties of raspberries.
Any trees I grow will get espaliered to keep them low and broad so i can manage them better.

I agree!! And look! Another porch! Yippeee!Congrats Sarah. It is BEAUTIFUL. What gorgeous trees. Where is this wonderful place located?
We raised a few eyebrows here when we started our plantings. We live right up near the Montana border. But we have several grape vines, apricots, pears, apples, cherries, blueberries (they take a lot of extra care because our soil is so alkaline), rhubarb, and a huge strawberry patch. Now strawberries grow just about anywhere. The apples and the rhubarb like a colder winter. It was the pear that surprised folks here the most. You have to Grow what thrives.... where you are. Quote: There are a couple of varieties of Apple and Pear that dont have to have a continuous hard freeze in order to bear fruit. I have a friend that once owned 20 acres of raw land in Utah. Bought on a whim they would go up and camp on it once or twice a year. She said the wild straberries up there were to die for... about the size of one of this pink erasers you put on the end of a pencil. and you had to beat off the wild life to get a hand ful..... She said there was one area on the property that was at least two acres of them.
