The Front Porch Swing

I just thought I'd share. Here's my youngest (5), pictures taken by the oldest (20) - who refuses to have her picture taken. Silly girl.

Oh my goodness what a cutie!! Her smile makes me smile right back at her, even though I know she can't see me!

Well, the new place passed all the inspections, they agreed to the property split we wanted, and even though the sellers don't want to give us any financial consideration for replacing windows, we are getting a nice zero-turn lawnmower and 8 guinea hens to make up for it. Now with final approval of the loan - we will have a new house.

My mom and dad stopped by to see the house when the home inspector was there - DH was there also. Our impression is that they were not very impressed. My dads comment when I asked what he thought, "Its an old house." I guess he was expecting us to by another $300,000 place like we have now. This is what we can afford until we sell our current place. And yes, it is old, it was built in 1955 or '35 - they are not sure which. But it has obviously been a loved home and has been very well maintained. The mechanicals have been updated and everything is very high quality. And with 25 acres, we have some options ...
There is so much to be said for an older house. Details that today's builders don't even see are what make an old house special. I know that there are a lot of folks who love those clean, flat lines in a house, but I think I'd find myself at Home Depot or Lowes buying architectural details like columns to put between rooms, those ornately carved finishings for door and window frames, and big, bold baseboards. Good luck with the final steps, and here's lifting my glass to a quick sale of your current home so you can get settled into the new one soon.

Good for you. I keep a shotgun in my tackroom for personal and animal protection.

There are 3 Great Danes that are huge, they are as tall as I am standing, while they are on all fours. They don't like me to do my morning walk. Several other dogs that run loose in my subdivision. Many squeeze through my gate. They are not happy to see me ... they forget it is my huge yard. They are learning. My neighbor was home when I shot at his dog who was in my yard. Their dog always comes on property, growls and tries to intimidate me. I just tried to scare it away. Regardless, they bought a dog kennel for their already fenced in yard. They realize I am not messing around. A couple of years ago my husband had 150 chickens and another neighbors pitbull attacked and killed all his chickens! The owner to the fence when he was yelling at them. He was going to shoot them. The chickens were all dead. He waited for her husband who she had immediately called. The other day we called that neighbor to tell him his dog was killing his chickens. He said, "He is killing your chickens?" My husband responded, "No, yours!" ... Now he knows what that was like. Consequently when I take my walk I carry my handgun, and my knife. I carry a stick only to help me walk because I am disabled and unsteady. I know if I go down they will also. Let me add, before my disability from a horrific motor vehicle accident I was a Sheriff's Deputy. Now I just patrol my property.

Sorry your story about the dogs reminded me of this moment. Now I think, Maybe I shouldn't have posted this on this. Sorry.
Welcome Francis! If I've learned anything in my week or so on the porch (has it only been that long? I think I'm wrong there!) it's that if you feel it, think it, saw or heard it, we're interested in it. No need to apologize - there probably isn't one of us who even raised an eyebrow!

He loves me just the way I am. I just surprise him a lot!
Perfect!! Those surprises keep life and love fun! I asked Ken one time, "Why do you think we're still so happy together?" His reply floored me - "Well, for me it's because there are so doggone many of you running around here and I never know from day to day which one of you will be home." I think there's a compliment buried in there somewhere.

Prayers sent for all my friends and those in need.

Welcome to the newbies - I just set 3 dozen white chocolate macadamia cookies on the table. Enjoy before my DH eats them all. 14 years of marriage and I never knew that he loved them. They are not one of my favorites, so I never made them before.

Congratulations on your "new" house! We also bought an old house (my grandparents farm) 20 years ago. We've been renovating and cleaning up since then. But it's pretty well to where we want it now and we love living out in the country with lots of land. You can make the place and house really yours over time and its very rewarding to see it become like you have dreamed it to be. And the good thing about going at it over time, is that the longer you live there more you'll know how you want it to be. I think old houses have personality! They're comfortable. And that lawnmower will be a life saver for you!

Right after I moved in to this neighborhood, I had 3 dogs wipe out all but one of my breeding roosters. The roosters were in cages that the dogs demolished to reach the roosters. Talking to the dog owners did no good what do ever. I got a 22 rifle for my birthday........did a little target practice....... haven't seen a roaming dog since!

It sounds wonderful! Just remember parents always want their children to continue to do better - and may have an older generations outlook on what is better. Moving back to the farm when their generation was doing their best to move to the city, may not be their idea of 'advancement'. I know my parents are floored at me wanting to farm. They ran away from the family farm as soon as the first offer arrived. I wish I had that old farm. Even had our family name on the road, they cut a hole in the wall to open up the dining room and found these giant cedar planks that must have been 100 years old....I'd love to have had that place.

Beautiful girl! I am sure you are very proud of her. You will have to run the boys off when she gets a little older.......a big LGD might help with that....LOL.
Thank you all for the compliments. She's a sweetie. Her dad is large, has a beard, and carries guns.

LOL

When Katie was little Kenny's overprotective gland kicked in. We were talking about how cute she was and warned him that he'd have to beat the boys off with a big stick. He just grinned his Kenny grin and said, "I've got it covered. The first time a boy comes to pick her up - and he WILL come here in person to pick her up - I'm going to stick out my hand to shake his and say, 'Hi, my name is Ken. I'm her dad, and I've got no problem going to prison.'"

YES!!

Hey everyone! I didn't get online much yesterday, so I just got caught up! The 3 year old has been sick since yesterday, so that has kept me pretty busy! She has a stomach bug or something, so it will probably go through everyone....

The chick is cute Bee!
Loved the stories!
I can totally relate to the dog incidents.... although I haven't seen the huskies on our property as long as Ratchet is outside. Although we did see them in the neighbor's (not owner) yard across the road, and coming down the road.... So Hubby got the shotgun and I got the .22 out. We didn't have to use them though!
