I don't have to do that with these guys. They are not really game birds.
What breed is he.... sorry I must have missed it. He looks like a long tail. I want Sumatras and they are considered long tails but they dont grow that long train. Like the Japanese do.
deb

They are Cubalayas, people say they are long tails but they are not, their tail is just as long as a normal rooster it is just the why they are built to slop down instead of up.
My mother was quite pleased that Ben doesn't smell like a dog...I think she is getting quite fond of the big huffalump.

She doesn't even mind that he is staying close to the cabin/house instead of up where all the other animals are. That's simply amazing! (she's a clean freak)

Searsmom, sounds like she is a keeper!

Jellybean... depending on your weather (cold, rain, snow, etc) I like this plain ol' shed type coop. You could put windows in the two sides and outside access nests and a run in front. You can cover the open side in hardware cloth and cover part of it with clear plastic should the weather get bad. I also like the tin instead of wood - wish I had done that on mine. That would help should you ever get lice/mites in your coop and it would last a loooong time maintenance free.

For Texas I think this is too closed in. I like it, but the air flow would not be good. On both sides I would back off the tin to about half way.
Really bummed out. I mentioned that my babies came from Meyers and that the Delawares are really puny . Lost 2 the first 3 days and another 2 today. I thought I caught one by bringing her in and washing in warm water and blow dry. An hour later she was up and eating. Now she's gone also. 4 out of 7. Really bad batch this year. Golden comets and White rocks are going great. Sad.

So sorry!

Ohhh I'm TRYING to hatch some eggs too. The temp has been crazy - up and down, up and down. I don't know if I have killed them all or not. I have three thermometers in there and none of them agree! I'll be glad when time's up whether they hatch or not.
I hate that feeling!!!! Sending prayers your way

Could I join the Porch Gang? I've read this thread and really responded to the conversations. It's so good humoured and respectful and supportive throughout. Some of the other threads can be a bit daunting for a newcomer. Nice to have what feels like sanctuary. What can bring? I do compost. I have an open mind. I did castrate two rams, with vet help. Got 10 pampered chickens. Oh, how about homemade lemonade to celebrate spring?
Hi

I love this group also, so helpful and respectful.

Pulling up a chair for a few seconds while I sip some lemonade on break...

They had a going away potluck for lunch for me at work today. It was very nice and calm, not where everyone spends $15 each at a restaurant... I like this better.

Everyone pinched in and got me a gift. It's a beautiful handwoven wool blanket for those cool days...

They said they'd thought about ordering me some chickens, but weren't quite sure how to go about it! LOL!!!!
How sweet! Yes, I am getting tired of always celebrating at a restaurant, it is so expensive and you really only get to visit with the people right next to you! Potlucks are the BEST!!!!

I like the sound of this thread! Everyone seems so nice... I just joined BYC a couple weeks ago and I'm still getting used to things... May join?

Are those Breyers (sp?) horses in your avatar? I LOVE horses!!!! Some day I will either own a Mustang or Arabian, I am super short and both breeds match what I want. Welcome!

Earlier in this thread I read about someone working on a chapter in their novel. So, trying to be in that literary spirit, I will tell you about my farm and my critters in a poem, which I just made up now, so enjoy, don't be too critical.

Four horses at pasture,
I guess, just for the view.
Two barn cats, three house cats,
What can you do?
An orchard and veg garden feeds us each day;
Two crazy dogs invite us to play.
Sheep for their wool,
Bees for their honey,
Chooks for their eggs,
SO! We don't make any money!

Cute! :)
