The Front Porch Swing

If I didn't have kids and I had unlimited funds, I'd open up a coffee shop/bookstore/cafe. I'd employ someone who loved to bake and I'd sell books...old and new. It would be a place where folks would come and hang out, meet friends, make friends. I'd want to go somewhere far away from where I am now-a place that has mild winters, preferably near the water.

Maybe the person who I hire to bake would teach me a thing or two about baking!
OOOOH!!!!! NICE!!!! I want one of those near my house! Maybe a couple chess tables too? And books.... yes - that kind of place should outlaw romance novels - except on the pink couch over in the corner under the poster of Tom Selleck...

Let me check the catalog I have for maturity times. Okay, Mortgage Lifter says 83 days to harvest, but if you start them inside you'll be way ahead of that curve. The Heirloom Rainbow Blend is 80 - 100 days, but again starting them inside gives you a leg up on that. I've always done that - ordered seeds from Gurney's and started them inside, and I never had any problems. They don't ship plants until it's time to plant in your individual zone, but we don't fit into the regular zones because we are high desert, so we have a much warmer micro-climate here than in surrounding areas. We got tired of all of the nurseries deciding for us when to plant and holding off our shipping until they thought our area was ready. But seeds they ship when you order. Good luck! Hope this helps!
Oh my goodness!!! Up here May long weekend (around the 24th) is when things get planted... 84 days would be August and we may get tomatoes for about 2 weeks... If we are lucky, but we definitely get green ones!!!

Can't wait to our new house!!!! plant tomatoes and harvest for... AGES!!!!

Best thing from the garden is Fresh tomatoes, and fresh chives (and fresh bread if you have a cob oven!)

When I lived in Manitoba I started tomatoes inside, then when they were big enough, transplanted them into skeps with wheels. During the day I set them beside the southern wall of a white metal barn, to soak up the sun, then rolled them back into the barn at night to avoid nighttime temperatures and be kept warm by the horses. Did that until the danger of frost was long past then just left them out. That ploy gave me a two week head start and made it possible to have a really good beefsteak type tomato harvest in that climate. Oh, but I was much younger then! I doubt I could go to all that trouble now.
