The Front Porch Swing

Hey everyone!!!! I've not been on the computer much for the past couple of days.... We had pictures made of the kids today for Easter! I am loving what I have seen so far! I can't wait to see all of them! Not much going on on the chicken front. Glad everyone is getting their coops done and gardens planted! I'll try to check back in later!

What a beautiful photo of some very good looking kids! You must bust your buttons every time you look at them! Ma used to tell us that children were God's promise that there will always be a tomorrow. Evan, Katiebug and Kendra will be here for Sunday dinner and an Easter Egg hunt. Kendra has too much trouble competing with her age group in the community hunt with her chair. Those wheelchairs go like lightening on smooth surfaces, but not so good on uneven ground. I told the kids to leave the brown eggs (dog) and the green and white ones (chickens) but they could have all the others. We could get a thunderstorm later tonight - just the splash and dash variety - but it'll be clear and warm on Sunday.

I haven't been here on the Porch much today either - been perusing a lot of the other forums, though, looking for ideas for the poop board (which we somehow forgot to make) and making a final decision on whether to have the nest boxes inside (with outside access) or putting them entirely one way or the other. Bee finally convinced me to go deep litter in the run, so we need to get at that tomorrow. Goodness knows we have plenty of leaves with our giant trees! Ken found a ventilation fan in the garage that's designed for the thinner walls in mobile homes. It has a chain that I have to pull to start the motor and open the flap on the outside. It works perfectly, so he's installing that tomorrow too while I fill the run with whatever kind of deep litter material I can find.

I'm gonna try to get through the night leaving the pop door open instead of locking it up. The doggone coop is only 15 feet or so from our bedroom window, so I'm hoping all I hear tonight is peace and quiet! If any critters show up I'll make Ken go out on accounta I'm asceered of things making noises in the night. Last night the girls (and Charlie) just did not want to go in - Ken finally rigged a plastic bag around a stick and waved it above the coop, ala an episode of "Alaska the Last Frontier." Worked like a charm - they couldn't get inside fast enough. Of course, then they decided to roost on the 2x4s holding the framing together. Revenge? I ended up with poop on my nicely painted walls. I hope to get outside and sneak a picture or two of them roosting there because a couple of people have asked. Scared the peewadding outta me when I shined the flashlight at the spot where there's usually a chicken puddle and catching a glimpse of something dark on the wall above my head. First panicked thought I had was that we'd done such a good job with ventilation that bats found their way in! Turns out it was only chickens...on almost every 2x4 framing crosspiece. Two here, three there....I think out of 22 there were only 6 or 7 in the usual corner on the floor. Well, I'm the one who wanted them to start roosting!

Happy Good Friday! Good morning, everybody else! I need a little medical advice.

I was stupid yesterday and unknowingly stepped into an area where large black ants were and got about ten bites on my foot. I didn't scratch and immediately washed it with vinegar and aloe vera, but in the night, I must have scratched.

Either way, my foot is swollen and though it could be much worse, it is uncomfortable. Are there any home remedies that could help me lessen the swelling or the pain? I might end up taking some Benadryl, but I don't want to quite yet because it'll make me sleepy. I have some work to do first (and would painted eggs by a drug-addled girl just be awesome?).

Also, one of my dogs is still eating eggs. I found my fake egg (filled with mustard and vinegar) in the yard, broken up. Funnily enough, the chickens were enjoying the mustard, haha! Those little dogs are going to be locked away if this happens again. I won't put up with an egg-eating dog. I need my ducks to lay eggs and if I'm not getting them, well, I won't be happy. The only way I can do this, I think, will be to keep Rosie kennels all day and only to let her out when someone is outside. That would really, really suck.

Is there any way to make a small-dog-proof duck nest without having to segregate ducks or dogs from the rest of the flock?

ER doctor told me when we found out that my daughter is highly allergic to ants to soak the foot in hot (as hot as you can stand it) salt water. Regular table salt. If you'll do this as much as you can the foot will be fine tomorrow

Your chickens can play the piano???

There is a baby grand in our little barn. Came with the property, covered over with a blue plastic tarp. Don't know what it would cost to get it back in usable shape though, probably many thousands of $$ which I don't have to spend on such things. I expect my chickens would just poop on it.
