I'll take one order of "want not", please.

Finally getting some seeds in the ground...spring chores have been a challenge this year due to a couple of disc herniations flaring up. Got most of the wildflowers planted and got the second tilling of the garden plot done. Tomorrow, if the Lord wills it, I'll get the salad plot hilled, covered with suppression cloth, seeded and fenced off.

Will have to build my rooster pen back due to the vigorous breeding of my new rooster...he's tearing up my girls something awful. He's targeting just my WR, of which I only have three, and he is very young and studly, so he's wearing them to a frazzle.

Also getting the last seed tray planted and into the sun.

The solution I came up with for feeding the layer flock along with the meat chicks has worked out well and it keeps both groups out from under my feet while I'm feeding. I built a bigger trough, cut a hole in the side of my coop and turned my winter leaf storage space into a feeding pen. It has the tarp flap over most of it, so it's out of the rain, the leaves will keep the ground from getting muddy and the fencing keeps the dog from cleaning up any left over feed that can be snacked on later.

Not having the feeder and the feed bucket inside the coop has made a world of difference...I already had a 6X3 ft. brooder taking up one whole wall and this left me very little space for all the rest of the equipment and the feeding. This gives me a little taste of the room I'll have when I tweak the coop soon...this is the smallest coop I think I've ever had and it's driving me nuts. Now that the flock has exploded in numbers, I need an upgrade real quick and in a hurry. Luckily these hoop coops are a snap to change and expand, on the cheap and very easy.

Good job Blooie!!

No chicks here yet. I'm still waiting for my Delawares to hatch. I really hope some do hatch!!! I will be so frustrated if hey don't!

The chickens were screaming again super early this morning, so I woke Dad up and sent him out there to get his personal proof there really is a raccoon prowling our poultry area. The raccoon ran away from Dad ... guess Dad is more scary than I am ... it's a young one. I pointed out it didn't give birth to itself.

The pest patrol guy came today and set four traps baited with gophers. I hope we get 4 raccoons tonight. I'm a little confused about why "we" didn't do this ourselves, but as I'm a weenie I'm not going to ask.

LindaB, I think there is plenty of time to get other breeds later if you find you really want them.

Howdy Jen.
