The Front Porch Swing

Lindz,
Do you have Jewel weed growing near you? It probably isn't up yet this year. When I find it I pick a lot, then put it in the blender to make a paste. I freeze it for use all year long. They make a poison ivy soap with it. I am going to try to make the soap this year ,but most of the time I just slather on the green goo. It normally clears mine up in 24 hours. This time a year you are probably stuck with benydryl and calamine lotion. So sorry, the itching drives you crazy.

Is Jewel weed the delicate waterside plant with tiny snapdragon type orange flowers and poppable seed pods? That we call Touch-me-not? Because I've got some growing by the pond but I sure wouldn't want to make a slathering paste out of the wrong thing!

I had just read an interesting article re. nettles this morning. Here it is:

http://www.offthegridnews.com/2014/04/21/4-all-natural-allergy-remedies-that-work/

2. Stinging Nettle Tea
Stinging nettles are an effective way to relieve hay fever. In a study done by the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon, 58 percent of hay-fever sufferers reported it to be effective. And 48 percent of the allergy sufferers said 300mg of the freeze-dried stinging nettle was as effective as other allergy medications. To receive these and other benefits of stinging nettle tea, purchase the tea at a health food store or drugstore and follow the directions.

If you’re in the wilderness and are living off-the-grid, you can easily make your own tea. But as their name suggests, stinging nettles can hurt you! So you will want to wear gloves and a long-sleeved shirt to protect yourself before trying to look for a plant.

Thankfully, if you do get stung, don’t worry. It’s not deadly, or even dangerous. To help with the pain, break open the stem of a stinging nettle plant and squeeze the liquid out. Next, apply the liquid directly on the irritated skin.

To make stinging nettle tea:
  1. Find a small, young nettle.
  2. Take the leaves off of the top.
  3. Put a couple of leaves in a cup and pour boiling water over it.
  4. Steep the tea for 10-15 minutes. Be careful and make sure that you allow the tea to infuse for at least 10 minutes, or it will still sting—and hurt! Take the leaves out and enjoy with your favorite sweetener
Stinging nettle tea can be very cleansing, so only have one cup a day until you become accustomed to it. And never have more than three cups a day.

What is Polk Salad.....?     I remember a song called Polk Salad Annie.....

deb "off to look it up on the internet"

The older folks especially like it. It has been a yearly thing to be sent out to "pick polk". I never did like it too well. It is a lot like boiled spinach, mustard or other greens but it's too bitter to me. And I always said I didn't care to eat food that already smells like somebody passed gas. I remember many times walking in the house and as soon as you open the door -peeeew wee! lol

Oh yeah, if you don't boil it about 10 minutes then strain that water off then cook it, it will give you the runs big time. lol It gets a pretty purple berry on the top when it matures. I've seen goats eat those berries then have the purple runs. LOL

@Lisa... polk can be VERY cleansing too so I have been told. lol

I will pass on the Polk Salad.

We use to make invisible ink out of the berries!

I've noticed that around here ETA means "Edited to Add". I just used it in that context.

And I like to use TPTB for "The Powers That Be." I don't think I invented that one, but it isn't all that popular, so seems to cause more confusion than necessary.

DH had me puzzled for the longest time. OH, also.

I gather LOL isn't cool any more. I tend to type variations of hehehehehe (hahahaha, bwhhahahaha). Which can be typed jejejejejeje if Spanish ... that one tripped me up for a while.

FWIW, YMMV, IMHO, IMNSHO ...

Around here all the BOs and BAs and RIRs and SLWs and WLs and WRs just get translated in my little head to "chicken, probably."

DH still has me stumped lol

Have you ever had fried polk? You cut it up then bread it and fry like okra. I remember eating when I was very young at my grandmother's house. I don't remember it tasting bad. I've never tried Polk Salad. I had a broody last year set under a huge polk plant.

It's about time to start looking for Morel mushrooms.
