The Front Porch Swing

@PerchieGirl Deb... Your fires make our tornados not look so bad. At least with a storm shelter or just a good place in our house we can survive a tornado. Fires are scary!

I like those Barbados too. I know of a vet here who had some years ago. I think he might have the Kats now, not sure.

@Bee, thank you for the info on the hair sheep. I'm thinking seriously on it. I'm getting tired of trying to keep up all this yard and the fields right around the house could use some teeth on them too. There is probably three acres right here where I want them to take care of. It is probably half open pasture and half woods, so plenty of shade.

How do you make the bolus? I wish there was a "good" book on raising livestock of all kinds *naturally*.

When you get a bolus gun, you'll see the tube has measure markings on it. I just did 5 cc garlic juice, 5cc ACV, 5 cc raw honey. Fifteen cc is a normal sheep bolus amount and I just made it up as I went along. It worked well. Even worked to rejuvenate a lamb I almost killed through a flubbed castration...and he started to put weight on after that like crazy. I thought I had lost him for sure as his gums were pale and he couldn't walk after his mom anymore but the bolus put him on his feet in 10 min. and it was all uphill from there.

Thanks for all the welcomes!

:frow Welcome to The Front Porch!  Would you like some Sweet Tea or Unsweet?  We have mint and lemons to go in it also.  All the desserts for some reason are over by Miss Bee.  We have plenty of seating.  You can sit on the porch railing, steps, buckets, hay bale, rocking chairs, and of course, the swings.  Pop in whenever.  We love good stories.

What part of Indiana are you from?  I am from S. Indiana area but now live in Texas.

Lisa :)

How about an Arnold Palmer? ;) I'll bring the lemonade!

I grew up on the north side of Indy in the burbs. Now we are on the west side just far enough out the city will probably get us by the time out kids are grown. It's paradise now though! Where in southern indiana are you from?

Praying everyone in the line of these storms stays safe. We had rain here in VA today. Normal April showers. We are under a flood watch, which always makes me laugh here in the mountains. I remember when I was little all the flooded roads and soaked basements in WI. If it floods at my house now on this mountain, we're gonna need an ark!

A couple spring flower pics for you all. The white dogwoods are still amazing. My pink ones didn't give much of a show this year and are already done. The lilac was a pleasent surprise. We just bought our place in August, so I am still discovering all the spring goodies. I have loved lilacs since my childhood. The smell takes me back to my nana's backyard. I would eat my breakfast outside at my little tykes table while she dug in the garden. She always had the prettiest lilies.

Beautiful!! I can't wait to get some things planted around here! Our property was pretty neglected when we bought it two years ago, we are finally to a place we might be able to do some landscaping this year!

Bee is right about the sweet and manageable nature of Katahdin sheep. I have very friendly nine year old Katahdin Dorper cross who lives out with a herd of little Shetlands all year long. He is their guardian angel. That's why he's nine.

I'll take a photo of him when it stops raining. I have the silliest video of him letting another sheep use his back to help reach some leafy branches, but its so in the distance I don't think it would be clear enough. When I went to video closer they scurried away as if they had been breaking the law! Instead of making my fortune on funniest home videos!!

Quick note - got here safely. Spent most of night at hospital, staying at Linda and Russ's house so came back for shower. Heading back up to hospital after a bite to eat. Those of you in stormy areas, keep ducking! Prayers and smiles -

Bee and anyone here since we are on the porch, when growing up my mom used to make us save the bean broth after boiling all types of beans for our meals to feed the goats with, we would add it to their water and they would gobble it up like a treat, mom said it was very nutritive to them. Apart from the richness in protein what else would be it's benefit? Anyone raising goats ever done this?
