The Front Porch Swing

Yay! The feed mill I'm going to start getting my local, no-GMO, super healthy all-purpose pelleted poultry feed from has been down for repairs, but I just got word from them they should be up and running again in a few hours, and probably caught up with their orders by the end of the week. So ...

On the subject of ordinances. San diego city propper had a NO chickens ordinance up till about two years ago. Now a new law has passed you can have I believe up to five....

Up till then people who lived in San Diego County which includes quite a few small high density towns were left to decide for themselves. Each town had the right to say Yay or Nay. but for the most part If you had property large enough to provide housing for your chickens that allowed the chickens to be housed no closer than fifty feet from any home. This included your neighbor. You were good to go.

The ordinance then was four chickens per person living in the house. Or something like that... and no roosters.

So The City of San Diego did this blanket ordinance that covered areas that had no ordinance for chickens... Again the fifty foot limitation. No roosters.

But in the process they ruled that those people who lived in rural areas where Roosters dont matter you are only allowed two. The exception is in areas where I live its limited to acreage. I am allowed five roosters. It put a few breeders out of business. One fellow who had had breeding program for sixty years had to shut down. He was in his eighties it put him out of business.

Their reasoning? To eliminate people who were raising for cock fighting. You should have seen the adds for Roosters on Craigslist after that. Course the cock fighting is done in Mexico so they had originally slipped under the radar specifying that these birds were ornamental pets only.

I know the topic is taboo here so I wont say any more on it. Except there is an obvious difference in the way they are raised versus the way Joe chicken farmer raises for showing or breeding quality of eggs. So San Diego threw out the baby with the bath water and kept the tub....

I am glad they finally allowed chickens. I am certain people who are allowed to have roosters will continue as long as no one complains. It still makes quite a few law breakers now.

So those folks that are really into chicken math also have more kids then, right?

We've got 5 folks here, so I get to have 20 chickens... would need more kids to have more chickens.

*snicker*

We're pretty lucky, our ordinance is pretty vague. You're fine as long as nobody complains.... I had the city called on me when my first batch grew into 9 pullets and one very, VERY loud cockerel. Trouble was, the cockerel had been eaten a week before the city official came by
roll.png
He actually looked around my coop, said it was the cleanest he'd seen in a long time, said I was fine, just not to go crazy and get too many or start raising them like a farm with the goal to sell eggs (I'm sure they dont care about selling the occasional box of eggs, just not ya know... have 200 birds in your backyard).

He also told me to get permits for my dogs, because whoever complained about the rooster also complained about the dogs not being licensed... Now, that one made me MAD. My dogs are in a chain link area AWAY from any roads. You can't even see them from any roads. The ONLY people who can see them are my neighbors IF they would walk up to the fence and looked over it. Now, that's a whole lot of effort to go through just so you can complain about something that should not even be an issue. What does my dog not being licensed matter to you? It's not going to make them bark less
tongue.png

Our dogs got tag number 8 and 9. That's right.... 7 other dogs in this town have licenses... we have more than 7 dogs on our STREET. I could understand licensing them if they ever left the yard, but they're not.

Anyway. The neighbors that live right next to my coop love them. The previous neighbor thought they were great and the new neighbors knew they were there... We talked about them before they bought the house and I gave them a heads up about what to expect. The new neighbor is in love with them. She's always asking about the girls
cool.png
The coop is about 20-25 feet from the property line on that side. Their house is 50 feet from the coop, if not more. All the other neighbors are ATLEAST 200 feet from the coop. Fortunate to have 1/3 acre here.

We did put in a 6 foot privacy fence toward the road, when the neighbor put the house up for sale... We wanted to make sure it looked ok and not hold up any sales for her.

The barrels have since been enclosed too.

The chickens free-ranged while we completed the project..

This is the end of our driveway. Storm shelter may not be the prettiest thing to look at, but the neighbors are welcome to use it (which we have told them too

I'd love some of that!

Well its been a very long day but God seems to be listening to my pleas for mercy. Got up at 6, fed chicks, rabbits then headed up to get one of my big chickens since it was now found I had two boys. So Amwan got traded for a Rosie. Gonna try and post a pic if anyone can help with age and breed it will help. Also there is a thread on egg colors determined by earlobe colors I need to find. Hers are red. Went to get mesh but he said he would not have anymore til 1pm. Met a lady from Syria another refugee family sat to tea and coffee. I asked how many kids she had she told me 3 boys 1 girl. I only saw 2 boys. She then told me one was killed at 5mo, a bullet took his head off laying in his mothers arms.....I didnt have words. Took daughter to get new headphones then back for mesh. Home to finish the task. As we were coming back we got a call my bil was at my house.
seems my mil told him I HIT HER! Yep I told him if I hit her you would know. Ive never disrespected an elder and I hate her lies. I know she has said the same of my sil and dementia or not I will not accept her to lie about me. I told him that I had not touched her and I had only told her "Ous" which means be quiet. Cause I didnt want to listen to her banter. Anyway, I told him that this house belonged to 3 of us. My fil, mil...my bil family and my husband. I have rights same asthem. I was told we could have any animals we wished but soon as we did people got talking. I told him until I had my own land I would keep my animals on the roof or balconies. I told him that b4 we got wood, put it in the field and they took it from me no asking. He said he would talk to dad. He came back and said I could have some land and him and his son would help me build a place for my animals. Funny hubby sends money and its ok build, but no money forget it! My eyes are drooping so ill post more later.

Just keep holding on to the Lord Jesus!! He never leaves us nor forsakes us!! So thankful you are going to get more land and housing for your animals, even though it is money motivated!! Such a blessing for you!

I'm way too sensitive about little ones getting hurt right now. I swear everytime I so much read about a baby getting hurt I feel sick/weepy. Might as well stay off the internet, huh? This day and age we got little ones dying left and right.... must've been easier in the past, didn't hear about news from all over the world, just your own backyard.

Anyway. Things'll turn around for you from the sound of it.

I have a question! A few days ago there was a discussion on covering an overused hens back, I think using duct tape?? Did anyone use it and if so how did it work. I would think that would keep the skin from breathing.
hu.gif
Anyway, I have a hen that has the top of her wings completely rubbed raw, along with a naked back. Any suggestions? I'm sorry if this has been discussed to death, but this thread goes soooo fast, it is hard to keep up!!!

Thanks. Inspires me to get on it. I've been putting it off.

Here is a link to a source of chicken saddles with wings ...

http://www.hensaver.com/FAQ.html

The one I made with nothing more than needle, thread, scissors, flat elastic, and an old pair of jeans was the very simple kind ... with tighter wing elastic, it never came off and was all cotton/breathable, didn't get too dirty, and it looks as good as new after a couple months of constant use. It was held away from the wound by the hen's feathers ... so the wound could heal.

I'd be worried about plastics or synthetics. Honestly, I'd be worries about duct tape type things. But I'm curious about using them for a saddle.
