The Front Porch Swing

Mmmmmmm. Mmmmmmm. Mmmmmmm. Making turkey chowder. I sure hope it tastes as good as it smells!

I don't know that I've ever made a chowder.....what makes a soup into a chowder, I wonder?

Yep. Plus ... Bacon!!!!

Slice up some bacon and cook it, but stop before it's crispy. Remove it from the pan with a slotted spoon. Then cook your onion & celery (if you want) ... maybe add more butter. Add extra veggies if you want ... red bell peppers are nice at that stage. I removed that with the slotted spoon and stirred in some flour ... that's optional! Add in the stock (I strain mine through a linen towel so it's nice and clear) and potatoes. Cook until potatoes are almost done. Add back in cooked veg and maybe other veg that doesn't need as much cooking -- roasted veg could be nice, turkey chunks, oh I added a lot of corn!, and cream (you could use milk). Plenty of salt. I used fine sea salt this time. Pepper -- purists would say white pepper.

Mine isn't super thick, but you can make it so thick the spoon stands up in the bowl. You can also add cheese -- even for me that seems excessive. I dressed mine today with diced tomatoes.

I admit I combined cooking the bacon and onion & celery into one step today ... kinda already had enough standing at the stove before we even started chowder. But if you do this, start the bacon first.

There are two different versions of chowder ... New England, which is creamy ... and Manhattan, which has a tomato base. I prefer the New England kind. Lots of places always have it as their Friday soup of the day.

It's like cream-of-whatever soup, but also rather distinctive ... maybe because of the bacon/onion/celery start? It's one of my favorite soups.

I'm an expert cuz I've made it twice now. :gig

That's pretty gorgeous.

I gotto figure out how to stuff it in a kitchen thats ten bey eleven... LOL. But the general layout of stove and sink and window placement is what I have. There is another view looking at the counter with the roll out cabinet in place and it is along blind wall just like my kithcen would be...

I also only have one window. The one closest to the wall where the stove is. I want to leave that cabinet free. because thats where I want to put a door out to a summer kitchen/pantry. There is fully enough light to light the rooms without that window. but then again that summer kitchen will have lots of windows and an exit to the patio.

Little Diane and Dustin got here this morning. She'd never flown before and she was absolutely breathless when she came down the ramp! She chattered a mile a minute while Dustin just grinned at her. We had set up our pop up camper for them to sleep in (this house is so cotton pickin' small we have to have mice make reservations for room) and we thought it would work out great. We've done that for years when people come. Hook up the power, fill the propane tank for the furnace, set up the porta-potty and it's almost like home. Well, sure. Normally. But it's storming. I mean really storming. Torrential rain, high winds, hail...oh goodie! And Motel 5 1/2 seems to have developed a leak on the canvas at the bed. Why not? And it's looking like my flat-lander guest isn't going to handle the altitude well. Already has the headache, can't stay awake. So I gave him a Pepsi, a couple of Advil and make him go in and rest for awhile. Hope it's as short-lived as the rest of our visitors have experienced. Also hope to get Dustin down to my eye doctor this week - he managed to break his glasses last night. LOL Interesting vacation so far.

She was having such a good time! Oh, how I've missed her!
