The Front Porch Swing

Blooie for President! :ya And Bee as vice president? Or however you gals wanna do it, as long as you do it ;) This country could use a fresh wind. Nothing like a mother to set this mess straight. About them dairy cows..... MOO. :gig And that's my son's pig. He has an obsession with this thing... and the pig has to sit on top. Adds to the barn yard feel I suppose. I read most of the posts, sure can't remember what all I wanted to say. Ha!
I second someone on this thread running for president and vice president......... ( I could say something like our present leader does not have a clue about so many things...........but I won't :( )

I laughed about that suggestion because Bee doesn't "do" politics...at all....don't even read about them, discuss them, or even give them any of my thoughts or time.

There's always Queen Blooie and Princess Bee.

I'm a born servant and would never do well in a position of power or honor.....I'll stay as a servant girl. Give that to someone who likes to wear crowns and dresses.

Can't have a barefoot hillbilly serf as a princess.....that only happens in fairy tales, thank the good Lord.

One of the people I was in grad school with, and am now FB friends with, and is one of those gloriously beautiful redheads that makes you stare, and is is a buddhist, and is an animal-rights activist vegan, and is also a somewhat renowned author of book(s? -- we were in grad school for writing) and articles about dogs. Here is a link to her recent article ... about having a predator for a pet.

I admit I could only read a few paragraphs of this article. I want to read it well and report back to her all of my glowing, praising responses to it, because I feel a personal connection to Lee, but when I do try to read it I just get very, very, very sad. But not as sad as I got while trying to read her facebook posts about how she handled the passing of her last beloved dog. I mention my personal reaction to the perspective presented in her writing for full disclosure, not because I want to trash Lee. I know she is speaking for a lot of people with similar & genuine challenges ...

I've often wondered how animal rights activist vegans can have pets

Well, not judging Lee (and I didn't read the whole thing either, have work to do) but I agree. It just doesn't make sense. She feeds her dog meat, probably from inhumane sources. She gives the dog CHICKEN BONES! Any vet will tell you that is asking for a perforated intestine. Won't happen often but often enough.

Then consider this line: "First of all, there are the facts of life: that dogs are predators, and predators track and feed on prey."
Animals with eyes on the front of their heads are predators, those with eyes on the side are prey. Though ALL animals prey on something, we know chickens have quite the varied diet of live animal foods given the opportunity. So, where are the eyes on humans? Right.

Exactly. Our eyes may not glow in the dark when the light hits them but we are decidedly predators, scavengers and eaters of animals and/or animal by-products. We need the B12 from animal consumption for healthy living....my parents found that out...a little too late.

As for training an LGD, I'm up for the challenge, and I have spoken with the breeder a whole bunch. This is not my first dog - I have worked with extremely difficult to train dogs (rehabilitate a 5yo completely untrained aggressive German shepherd/husky cross), have our current heeler cross who has been the object of many many compliments because of how well trained she was, as well as 2 rescue mutts that we got at the age of 2 and 10mo. All were completely different in terms of personality and ways to train -they reacted completely differently. The only difference now is that I have young kids, and that this is a puppy. This will NOT be a house pet (and I've already talked to the kids about that lots), but it will be different again.

OK, I guess I just misunderstood this from your original post:
" I've never had a dog of any particular breed before!"
Figured it meant you had never had a dog before. You've just never had a non cross breed before. I don't suppose that makes a whole lot of difference (other than the cost of the animal.
