The Front Porch Swing

My aunt and uncle live out if their camper! They travel around managing different camp grounds for the national park service out west mostly. They sign on for a season and when that season is over they pick up and move on to the next area.

Aaaaah someday DH and I want to get a camper and travel the country! I traveled most of the east coast as a kid so after I finished college DH and I made a two week+ road trip west right after Christmas. The Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Vegas, San Diego, Yellowstone, Mt. Rushmore and our favorite B&B in Wisconsin it was a blast!

The parents of one of my good friends did an amazing thing when He retired from the post office the house was paid for and they were beyond empty nesters. He drove the wife crazy being home all the time. So he got a job ferrying Motor homes across the United States. They were given about three days over the normal driving time to get there and were given gas money and enough money to buy food. It had to arrive clean and full of gas. And they were allowed a few extra miles... They got to see alot of the country.

France? Spain? Germany? Gee, I'm feeling like hot stuff if I get to go up to Billings! You must have had a great childhood too!

You've got to figure, my home country is twice the size of New Jersey, or about 1/3 of Alabama. Doesn't take much to make your way to other countries

We went to Paris for a field trip with school when I was 16, per chartered bus. We left at 5am, we were in Paris before noon. Did some sight seeing, had dinner and headed home a bit before midnight.

I had not been on a plane until I visited the US. All vacations were by car or bus.

My parents had a pop-up camper... they make vacations a whole lot more affordable. Hotels add up quick. Although when we went to Spain my brother was still under 12, which meant he stayed for free. Before the Euro, Spain was CHEAP. $400-$500 for a 10 day vacation for my mom, me and my brother, all meals included.

I have to ask, since google is betraying me. What is a motel 5½?

For me, caravans are the annoying things slowing up the traffic on roads. Still consider them more of a nuisance than something practical.

LOL.... your english is so good we forget.... Motel 6 is a common motel chain... some are very nice some can be a little bit.... worn around the edges.

Motel 5 1/2 is kind of a joke. Meaning something that is home built... Or a travel trailer or a tent in the front yard....

Quote: English is no problem. It's the idioms that sometimes give me problems. I get most cultural references, but being taught by US movies and TV shows has it's drawbacks. I'm probably a better speller and speaker than your average American. (Now I'm sounding a bit snobby again.) But I consider myself to be tri(and a half)lingual.

Trust me, that stuff got me the first years I lived here. Alabama has a wealth of strange sayings

Let's not even touch on 'Ebonics'. I worked with some black girls and I had honestly not been around black folks in the US (plenty in Holland, but there was very little difference between blacks and whites there). Anyway, these girls didn't like me much, considered me stuck-up, something I was decidedly not, but I spoke such proper English... Anyway. One of the girls said "Are you tryin' to get smart with me?" and my very intelligent (albeit infuriating) response was "I'm already smart." complete with questioning look, as I didn't understand the problem.

That situation escalated after a while, a few became friendly with me, after they realized my utter ignorance. One girl continued to have issues with me.. It ended with death threats by her and she ended up getting fired. She still looks at me as if she wishes to kill me, whenever she sees me. Although, I think that's just her personality.

My English was very proper.. I have taught myself 'Southern' to fit in better, although sometimes I really think I need to stop talking that way... I'd prefer for my kids to grow up with proper grammar skills and the way I've been talking I sound well... dumb.

Really quite shameful that I can spell English better than your average high school graduate.

My beautiful rooster is dead!

He's still outside.... his comb and wattles are purple. I'm afraid I killed him.

I bought him a rooster collar, to stop his crowing.... and well, it was helping a little, but not enough. So I tightened it a little more early this afternoon...... My poor beautiful rooster and he was so sweet! I had no idea it was too tight..

Never again. I'm returning it!
