The Front Porch Swing

I have a plant that has those papery lantern looking things on it in my yard. I pull it as a weed all the time, but I never noticed a fruit inside. I will look next time I see some. I have always considered it a pest.

Our field has a bunch of ground cherries scattered throughout. My boys brought me a bunch last fall wanting to know if they were edible. I think they taste kind of like a miniature tomatillo. I have seen recipes on the internet for a type of jam made from ground cherries. Last year we didn't get enough collected for that before the field was cut for hay. This year they aren't quite ripe yet. My sons brought me a couple the other day that were still green. They are a golden color when ripe and the husks have turned a yellowish brown.

i think we have them here also. I recognized that it was a nightshade and thought it to be a weed the deer and birds spread it all over

I was so happy to have bought a package of seeds and was waiting for spring to plant them and somehow I lost the whole little box of different seeds. About 20 different kinds of veggies. Never found them. sigh

Not this deb.... Though there is one on Allrecipes.com. I used that.... it was too sweet. There are a bunch on line...

The bad weather kept me from going into a festival in the city and pointed me toward the local farmer's market. I had always meant to check things out, but never had a chance. I happened across a vendor with ground cherries and was brought back to my childhood and visiting the Farmer's Market with Nana. It has probably been 20 some years since I have had any of those! I ate almost the whole bag that day. The vendor also had Pawpaws, which I had been wanting to try. Needless to say, I am in love. So… if it is the right season, we will also be adding pawpaw trees to our property along with pears the end of the month.

Deb, did I see you post a recipe a while back for crock pot apple butter? Or was it someone else? I have some less than beautiful apples that need to turn into something before they jump off the tree and become deer treats.
Misty Mountain, yes I posted an apple butter recipe last fall. I am about to pull it out today as I also have ugly apples that I need to process. I will post it again tonight. I was at "The Old Bat's" birthday party Saturday and didn't get in much forum time this weekend..

Oh Wonderful!! I would love to have the recipe whenever you get time. The apples are still on the tree. I hope to try some freezer apple sauce as well. I just bought some round plastic laundry baskets for a buck a piece at DG for lugging the apples up to the house. Who knows if they will work, and if they don't I won't be that hurt.

Thank you so much!

I think ground cherries are a thing you either love or hate. No in between. I love them. A friend of mine sells them at a local farmers market. I love to watch people's faces the first time they try one. It is either yum or yuck! I have some that I am going to try to dry the seeds from and start them next spring. I have never had a pawpaw. My neighbor said there was one on my property, but when we went to find it it was not where she remembered it to be. She grew up on this property and has showed me amazing wild plants. I have a huge wild asparagus patch that Doug almost mowed down because neither of us knew what it was until she showed me. She knows where the morels are in the spring and can tell you the uses for all kinds of wild herbs and plants. She is a real treasure.

I haven't had much time to post much lately. Trying to get moved in and set-up before winter.
We bought living room furniture, the couch is on order but the chairs are here, the cats are happy.

And we have bought a pellet insert to put in the fireplace. Hopefully, that will help to heat the house; at the very least, it should stop the wind whistling down the chimney and bats from finding their way in. We have a salesman coming out to measure the windows for the office and living room. We will have to do the rest of them over the next couple of summers.

oops... (well, not quite what I said)

I love people like that!
