We hit 81 degrees today and have a chance of thunderstorms tonight. That shouldn't surprise anyone. What's going to come as the surprise is that around 5:00 am the rain will change over to snow, we could see 1 to 4 inches, 6 inches in higher elevations, and the winds will be in excess of 50 mph. <sigh> You know you're in Wyoming when you step out the door and get a mouthful of Idaho.

I'm so glad we don't have to deal with snow down here. We had 12 hours of thunderstorms just the other day. Thunder, lightning, rivers worth of rain just pouring down. I'm so glad I built up the dirt in the coop and laid out hay. The birds would have been swimming (the ducks would've loved it). Then this morning we started out in 80 degree weather, by noon it was 60 degrees and drizzling and now it's at a comfortable 75. We'll see how long that lasts. If this rain keeps up, though, our grapefruits might actually have a lot less skin and more delicious pink meat inside. We have hundreds of tiny grapefruit on the tree and our peach tree just blossomed, too!

Looks like I got myself in a jam! I posted on someone's Facebook page because they were claiming to sell purebred Ameraucanas.

The bird had orange legs, a straight comb and no little beard. I said it was probably an EE if he got them at a hatchery.

He went off on me. Called me misinformed, claimed that I was ignorant and that if I was right, he'd have to call Google and get them to change their information.

Didn't have the heart to tell him that Google is as smart as the people who post on there. I said I was sorry for insulting him and that I hoped he could sell his chicks for $10 each like he planned.

I didn't wanna tell him that I have been chatting with Ameraucana show breeders for awhile and that his birds weren't even close to being purebred.

Another guy soon after defended him (the same guy who sold me a rabbit and claimed it was an American Sable when it was really a Holland Lop). It's like the blind leading the blind in there. I just backed off before I could catch the stupid.

Just point them to the Ameraucana web page Laura. Sounds like they wouldn't get 2 lines down the SOP description before they hit a snag. ORANGE legs?

Painful as it may have been for you, this guy is misrepresenting (*) what he is selling and needs to be shown as the charlatan (or TRULY ignorant chicken breeder) that he is so people do not buy from him unless they pay a MUCH lower price for the barnyard mutts he is selling.

@Blooie and here I was missing Wyoming - not! A windy day here is 20 miles per hour - they put out small craft advisories for the bay and lake.

We had 68 degrees and a 5 mile per hour wind. The day before it was 15 miles per hour wind and 64 degrees. To make up for the wind we got a nice soaking rain that night. Everything is greening up nicely. I didn't realize how much I missed Wisconsin. The wood frogs are croaking every night too! What a nice way to get to sleep. Soon the spring peepers will start - nothing like the smothering sound of the spring peepers.

That's what I said! My friends were going to buy these birds and I was on guard. Ten dollars a chick isn't completely outrageous for Ameraucana chicks but these were not even close. I did get in trouble with the lady who runs the sale group but I explained the situation and she understood. Of course, she said not everyone was an expert and I was tempted to send her a copy of the standards of perfection for Ameraucanas (I have a copy on my phone and my computer). I may not be a breeder but I know people who are and they know what is and isn't an Ameraucana.

The post got deleted either way and my friends didn't buy these birds. Next time, though, I would just message them and let them know. I've had enough of people calling me stupid for awhile. To be fair, I was also being super polite to him and saying that EEs were good birds, too. Didn't even question his price, just the breed. He went off.

He'll have trouble selling them anyway. And the guy who was defending him had to sell his goslings ($15 each for hatchery goslings, ridiculous) had to sell for less because he got desperate. No one wanted to buy them.

I miss the people who just raised chicken for eggs or meat. Lots of people around here are great business folks but they focus too much on breed. I love selling to people who just want eggs and are passionate about getting back to the land.

I have my big bucket of eggs in the kitchen and I just love to look at them. It's still exciting when I get eggs everyday. I wish I knew people who felt that way. The couple I do know are absolutely amazed.

$15 is a bargain for a POL pullet. Frankly, I'd rather keep 'em anyway. Love these little birds.

I am thinking of getting a few POL birds as soon as I get my coop set-up. Hopefully I can find someone in the area who is looking to sell some. I will get a flock of chicks also, but I WANT EGGS and I want them NOW!
The rest of my family can wait till chicks grow into layers, but I don't want to wait if I don't have to. Maybe not the most economical, but hey, I have been waiting 3 years to be able to get chickens. My sister who just went through cancer treatment kinda/sorta queried about getting fresh eggs from me once I get chickens. She has been buying organic eggs from a lady near her, but she has jacked up her prices again because the tourists will pay the astronomical price. I told sis that mine will not be "Organic" as I probably won't pay for the "Organic" feed, but they will be mostly free-ranged and raised as naturally as possible.

I had a lady looking for Easter Eggers.. but didn't want to pay $15 for my POL pullets because they were mixed. What the heck do you think an Easter Egger is? $15 is a bargain for a POL pullet. Frankly, I'd rather keep 'em anyway. Love these little birds.

I was selling a trio of Easter Eggers last year and even offered to throw in a frizzle roo that I didn't need. I told the lady I sold them to that I knew they were laying, but they wouldn't lay around me, haha! They would hide their eggs and then I'd find the shells in the yard where my dogs had taken them to eat.

She appreciated the price of $40, but I had several guys try to hound me for a better deal. They were super annoying and I was glad when the hens sold and the lady posted that she was getting green almost every day. She was ecstatic and those guys lost out.

I know the feeling. I wasn't getting any eggs for awhile this winter and I still hatch chicks from the summer hatches, so I was just sitting and waiting for something to happen. I eventually got eggs, but I ended up buying a couple new hens along the way. Still only got like one egg a day, haha!

My sister has been having an issue lately with eggs. Her potential FIL moved in with her and her boyfriend, and he eats a dozen eggs in three days. By the time Olivia gets a day off and can enjoy breakfast at home, all the eggs are gone.

However, it turns out he won't eat the "dirty" eggs I give her...or the green ones. So I sent her home with 19 green, brown and slightly smudged eggs from the birds. She has reported that she is able to enjoy breakfast and has been taking boiled eggs for lunch to enjoy. Yes!

I hope you can find some POL pullets once you get set up. Those are always the best eggs!

That is so funny. My hubs knows they are all the same.... but will still grab the white eggs first. Right now I only have white and brown. Wait till I get some easter eggers and start getting blue and/or green. Of course he is red/green colorblind so will be interesting to see how he feels about them. The brown ones may already look kinda green to him. lol
