The Front Porch Swing

You are a braver woman than I am...I've never in my entire life cooked a leg of lamb. And I've had a lot of long to my life! <sigh> I'll bet she tries it and likes it, and even if she doesn't don't let your confidence take a hit - you got this! I have total confidence in you!

Thanks..... VBG. I have no fear when trying something new.... I usually dont here because grandma is NOT the adventurous type.

My son will try it and if he doesnt care for it he will try it again. He will flat out refuse pork but If I cook it he always raves about it....

Grandmas idea of cooking a 7 bone roast is to boil the heck out of it on the stove with Carrots, Rutabegas, quartered onions, and potatoes.... NO salt and pepper.... when its all done its all the same color and consistency....

@perchie.girl
I had a grandma that did that to roast too...
I have made venison roast before that tastes like beef roast-juicy, tender, and flavorful. I've had people say that it was delicious...until they find out it IS venison. Then, their reaction is a green face and they suddenly feel nauseous. Plain silliness, but what can you do?

All you can do is keep your mouth shut and cook it right. Lamb has an "obvious cant sneak it by" smell while its cooking. If they have had it before and didnt like it your done for.

It cracks me up Mom hates Lamb as well. But she was macking down on a Gyros sandwich from my favorite authentic greek restaurant... I teased her.... I thought you didnt like lamb... "This isnt lamb its some sort of Greek ground meat" I chuckled... Yep beef pork and lamb in that ground meat... She blanched but she finished her sandwich but she wont order it again... Again I should have kept my mouth shut.

I think poorly seasoned meat or in the case of Venison poorly butchered meat has put alot of people off of something that can be quite enjoyable. Ever had pork that wasnt castrated early enough?

Ah well I dont care for pork with that strong odor... But I would try Wild boar in a nanosecond.

@perchie
I've had pork that tasted strongly "off" before. ( locally raised and slaughtered) Does that come from not being castrated early enough? Interesting.
I agree with you about fixing it right and keeping your mouth shut. One year my husband filled our freezer with venison. We had steaks, roasts, and a lot of it we ground up. It made delicious Cincinnati style chili. My sister-in-law and brother-in-law raved about it UNTIL my husband casually mentioned that it was venison. Suddenly, my sister-in-law felt ill and wouldn't eat another bite. It aggravated my husband because the "taste" hadn't changed,just the perception of what it was made from...

I just pulled a wikipedia article on Boar Taint.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boar_taint

apparently it can happen in females too. But only a small percentage will have it. 75 percent of people can and do smell it.

They pork industry is trying to breed it out.

So sad when people have these preconceptions.... they are missin out.

but then it just gives us MORE for ourselves... hee hee um hee.

Agreed. If someone else doesn't like it, that means more for my family and me!

naum naum naum.... smack smack mint jelly smak ..... Carrots... mheya.... Mushrooms nam nam nam....

juice over top smack...

grandma actually tasted it and didnt dislike it... ate about an ounce too.

she didnt like the carrots either.

Only thing was... it needed more salt... I wasnt generous enough. Next time I will do the leg as a roast by itself and the veggies separate....

Grandmas not a convert but she wont turn her nose up next time....

I'm so happy for you! Way to make something delicious! If only I could get my sis to eat veggies. She's gonna need them when thu remove her gallbladder (apparently bad gallbladders run in our family :( )
