The Front Porch Swing

does anyone know if this appears to be brain damage in my 3+ week silkie?

Are you concerned about the head shakes? I'm sorry but I cannot help you with that. Did it get pecked on the head or something? Is it walking around and eating OK?

Well guys, here it is - the Adventure begins! my chicks are here. 15 dual purpose chicks.

The tote is very temporary, I painted their brooder this morning, so I need to keep them here for the night. I figure that I will take better pictures and check them out when I move them in the morning. I set up a Momma Heating Pad for them and they are loving it. I already have one of the reddish chicks jumping up on top and lecturing to the rest of them.
@Blooie - thank you for the excellent thread recommending this method. They are very quiet, just happy little peeps as they peck at the food, wander around, take a drink and then back under the heating pad. I have a tiny little yellow one that shoots out of the heating pad like a chick on fire, dashes to the water, takes a drink, directly to the food dish for a couple bits of food and then wanders around the tote before ducking back under MHP. Too cute!

tjo84 Not trying to be sarcastic but, it is very hard to judge true brain damage in a silkie. They tend to do odd things and have odd behaviors. First I would wonder if something is bothering her ear or ear canal. Does she do this when she is around others and preoccupied ? Is she eating , drinking and pooping normally. ?

In the course of a day I'm in and out of a lot of threads, so unfortunately I can't recall where I've heard the same thing, recently. I do know 3 or 4 people have mentioned their silkie shaking it's head but acting normally otherwise. I think the advice to them was not to be concerned unless the behavior gets worse.

I would suggest posting on the "Emergencies, diseases, injuries, cures, " thread. Also ask on "Silkie thread," if this is a common behavior or early marker of things to come.

She is a beautiful chick- maybe this is just a little tic, like people that blink a lot.

I'm so happy that it's working well for you. If you had a hanging waterer they'd have more space in the brooder, but since it's temporary just until they move outside tomorrow, it's not that big a deal. You'll be so happy that you switched. I'll never go back to a heat lamp in the house for weeks on end! Post some pics on the Mama Heating Pad thread tomorrow too, would you please?

tjo84: It may be neuro in nature. I might try giving her some finely chopped liver for the B vitamins, and give her a bit of vitamin E from a vit E capsule. I'm not a vet, have no medical training, but If I saw that in one of my chicks, that's what I'd try. Or you could give her some Poultry Nutri-Drench. That's my #1 item to have on hand when hatching chicks.

I tricked her into eating some liquid B comples and Vit E oil by putting it on a piece of corn bread! lol she thought it was just a treat!
I am ordering Nutri Drench on line since TSC never has it in stock!
