The Great Capon Experiment

This is what was recommended by the member who began the big caponizing thread: "The first step to caponize is to starve the birds to reduce the size if the internal organs. 36 hours without food and 24 hours without water. For example on Thursday at 8PM I took the food away. On Friday at 8AM I took away the water and put the roosters in cages in my basement. On Saturday after 8 AM I was ready to get started." If they're being kept in a cool dark place they won't be too bothered by this, and if it helps make their operations go faster it's all for the good. I think it helps to keep them in a dark place, they just think it's an extremely long night.

So, how is this going? Were they caponized yet?

I have done 10 total. 1 died the next day. 4 are definitely slips (I could only find 1 of the testes). and 5 (I think) are fully caponized. More getting done tomorrow. :)

can't wait to hear! I talked with my 15 year old son who has plans to be a vet and he said he was up to joining in on the experiment. I will be buying the roo chicks tomorrow and we will follow along with you!

It's illegal in the UK. It's not illegal in the US. The UK has banned the practice as they consider it animal cruelty.

Lots of things are legal and illegal in different countries. PLEASE let's not argue about it.

That said, I did 5 more this evening. The first 3 went perfectly, and I then I had 2 'slips'. On one the testicle crumbled and on the other I accidentally DROPPED the detached testicle back inside the bird!!! AAUGHHHH! I rooted around trying to find it but it was nowhere to be seen.

The last batch of 5 went out to the capon pen yesterday. I was amazed at how quickly their incisions healed up. You can tell the slips, they got all up in each others faces. The full capons just planted their butts at the feeder and munched.
