The Great Egg Shipping Experiment!

The last box of eggs I picked up at the Post Office, I stepped around the corner just in time to see a Postal worker bringing my package up front to me. He was shaking it like a kid shakes a Christmas present! Duh!! When he saw that I had seen him he says I don't hear anything shaking is there really eggs in there? There is no telling what these packages endure on their trip. One thing I am sure of is there are at least a few morons that are postal employees!

I am just not sure how an egg that has the yolk scrambled could ever begin to develop but maybe I just don't understand. She said she has had good hatches this spring, but I am sure things could have changed.

A fertile egg on day one looks like this:

An egg damaged in shipping will re integrate itself around the blastoderm. If it is too damaged, it will not integrate completely and the ovum will die. The Scrambled look you see when you egg topsy after a week or so of incubation is not from shipping. Infertile eggs just do that regardless of shipping--I saw the same thing with infertile SG Dorking eggs that were hand delivered to me.

This is an infertile egg:

Look for the blastodisc when you egg topsy. That will tell you if they were fertile or not. It is possible that the egg was so damaged that it died within three days and there would be no veining. That is unlikely with 9 out of 13 eggs though.

If the package was not his (postal worker) why would he be shaking it? It is not like he is a kid and opening a present for his birthday. That makes me mad for you. I question whether he was trying to see if it is something he would want to keep. That is when you get "We are sorry sir we never received your package....we don't know what happened?" The only funny thing would be him getting home to find a box full of eggs...worth loosing your job over ? - What an IDIOT!

Yeah! It did not make any sense at all. He had called me on my cell phone at 6:15am to tell me my eggs had arrived and I had already had a lengthy conversation earlier in the week with him about the jolts & abuse these eggs seem to endure on their journey.

When I saw him purposely shaking them I was instantly PO'ed! What a moron!

I'm afraid I would have had to call him on it. "HEY! That contains raw eggs, why are you shaking it?!" Then I would have asked him who his direct supervisor is. Once he told me, I would ask, "and who is HIS supervisor?" Not being called on it means he will likely do it again. I am a firm believer in letting people know when they are acting stupid. I know most people are afraid to and think the idiot will get mad and retaliate, but that thinking just perpetuates the problem. If everybody that saw him do it said something to him and his supervisor EVERYTIME, he would be the one who was afraid to do it and would therefore be more carefull, IMO.

I agree with this totally! I know I have posted this before, but it bears repeating. I would probably add to the above, to get the name of the person shaking the box of eggs, document the time, date and postal location. File your complaint ASAP.
1. Go to the USPS website page and file a complaint with a customer service rep.You can call this number to actually speak with a representative. Call 1-800-ASK-USPS® (800-275-8777) Try to remain polite and professional and don't be harsh with the postal service people. Most of them try to do their best. I have a feeling that most of the damages caused to packages are caused by equipment, ie. loaders, conveyor belts, bins, etc. Be sure to get a name and document the time and nature of the complaint (remember, the squeaky wheel gets the grease)~ https://www.usps.com/customer-service/customer-service.htm
2. Purchase insurance on all eggs going out and eggs coming in. Insurance is very inexpensive and worth every penny!
3. Although it is a little work to file a claim, follow through and you will receive a check within 30 days for the value of your eggs + shipping!
4. Photograph damages, document everything! Document everything!

Hi everyone. I have been reading this thread for 2 days and I have to say I have truly enjoyed it more than any other thread. I am living vicariously through you guys. I can't hatch eggs in my bator right now because I am about to move in a week. But my little Japanese mama is sitting now. She has 12 eggs under her which are a hodge podge of my different little bantams. They are due on my birthday April 9th. I can't wait. I love reading about the different weather conditions you all have. It's crazy how it can be in the negatives when it is in the 70's here in Louisiana. Although we are having a little Easter cool snap right now 60 in the day 40 at night. Lol. I can't imagine snow like you guys talk about. Would love to see it at least once. It will be 81 by monday here!!
Now, THERE'S an idea of re-purposing! A nesting box out of a cat litter container! Ingenious! Guess it's time for me to start collecting my containers so I'll have enough for my 13 girls when they come of age in 9-10 weeks. I have two Siamese indoor cats, so this is a perfect solution for their new family members, the chickens!
