The Great Egg Shipping Experiment!

I agree with this totally! I know I have posted this before, but it bears repeating. I would probably add to the above, to get the name of the person shaking the box of eggs, document the time, date and postal location. File your complaint ASAP.
1. Go to the USPS website page and file a complaint with a customer service rep.You can call this number to actually speak with a representative. Call 1-800-ASK-USPS® (800-275-8777) Try to remain polite and professional and don't be harsh with the postal service people. Most of them try to do their best. I have a feeling that most of the damages caused to packages are caused by equipment, ie. loaders, conveyor belts, bins, etc. Be sure to get a name and document the time and nature of the complaint (remember, the squeaky wheel gets the grease)~ https://www.usps.com/customer-service/customer-service.htm
2. Purchase insurance on all eggs going out and eggs coming in. Insurance is very inexpensive and worth every penny!
3. Although it is a little work to file a claim, follow through and you will receive a check within 30 days for the value of your eggs + shipping!
4. Photograph damages, document everything! Document everything!
If you go with express mail it automatically comes with $100 in insurance.

Wisher ever since I joined BYC I have been reading this board you started trying to learn all I can on hatching and shipping eggs! Your ideas has been great for all of us to learn from! Thank you for sharing and helping me! I have not wanted to hatch any eggs so far but that may change later on and I hope to ship eggs later this year!

Thank you so much Wisher!

Second hatching lockdown tomorrow evening. I told my DH that I wanted to place the eggs in modified egg cartons. Since he never did this he is not comfortable. Can someone tell me if they have seen better success with hatching in a carton over laying them in the bator? Was there a difference at all?

I had a box of 14 eggs arrive in the mail where the box was in perfect condition, none broken, no dents in the box. They were wrapped in bubble wrap. I let them rest for 24 hours and put into incubator candled, made sure not to turn for 3 days due to saddle air sacs and on day 10 I had 8 clear and 3 blood rings. I tried to contact the BYC member that I got them from to let her know about the clears and have heard nothing from the member. I wasn't wanting anything from her, but a response would have been nice. I have bought off ebay and thought that the BYC member would have at least responded back. I emailed ones from ebay buys and they have reshipped due to low number to hatch 2 out of 14. Sorry just venting.

Your experience sounds very similar to mine. I think sometimes eggs that don't hatch are blamed on shipping journey when in fact the egg was infertile to begin with.

You can't hatch an infertile egg regardless of how many right things you do.

We can only control the incubation with shipped eggs. The health of the flock and conditions there cannot be overcome with bad shipping and incubation problems.

That is true and I understand the risk of shipping eggs in the postal service. It is amazing the difference in different parts of the same state, let alone different parts of the country. I sometimes forgot the phrase"DON"T Count your chickens before they hatch" or develop.

Hi, so sorry that his happened to you. I believe that anyone that is the business of selling hatching eggs should at least be prompt to respond to a buyer. I treasure my customers and I try to take extra time to check on the hatching eggs I sell. Be sure that you check on a members feedback and possibly ask for references from others that have bought eggs from a seller. There is NO EXCUSE for poor communication.

I agree! Poor communication is a NO NO! Unfortunately some think it is a bother to respond to you, some never will after selling eggs to you, and feedback is not always a true indicator. If you find someone who packs eggs well, responds to questions and concerns promptly, etc. you better value them!

I have had three breeders say they would ship replacement eggs to me. Only one of them as followed through, a year later after I contacted them.

Off to contact the ones that owe me eggs.....
