The Great Tolbunt Polish Hatch!! - Babies!!!

LOL, I guess I could do that. Or someone on here could bid against me (but not too high of course!).

Today is day 15, and cull day. . . I went from 21 eggs (not all Tolbunt) to 8 eggs. I now have 5 Tolbunts left.

So, remember that egg I kept candling that eventually went weird looking and died? Well, here's how it looked when it got cracked open. . .

I knew something was up with it - The whole time I wondered why the dead chick wasn't moving around at all, not even just plain floating in there. . . Well here's why. The fetus was literally stuck and perhaps even sort of burnt to the inside of the egg shell. When I opened the egg, everything poured out an odd creamy thick yellow color, with a lot of white "chunks" in it. Then, the embryo stayed inside - It was all stuck to the little fetus, which was stuck to the shell, so I peeled it away. The embryo eventually gave away, simply just a crisped skin, and I had to actually chip the fetus off the egg.

It was brown, crusty, and looked kinda burnt or something. . . Really weird.

In the end my skillet of eggs looked like this - Most of the darker yolks in there are from my own Polish, and the really white, icky looking ones on the right are a couple Tolbunts. The already broken up and smeared yolks are from my Easter Egger. . . Hers are always liquefied at this age.

LOCKDOWN is in 2 DAYS!!!

I am not so sure if the fetus was burnt? I have noticed with some quitters they will settle to one side(and stay there), maybe it is more like rigor mortis? Unless you have had a temp spike.... I have had it with quitters that were bigger and I don't have temp spikes since I went digital. Just an idea....

eta-- oh, and good luck with your hatch

No temp spike. I hear that one thing that causes a fetus to stick is the egg not being turned. . . But all my eggs are always turned. I have an automatic turner for that.

I put them into lockdown, candled them just a moment later (because I forgot to earlier) and guess what I found?? A DEAD FETUS!!!

It died the same day, it seems, as my other one, and for the same reason - It stuck to the eggshell and went brown.

Anyway, I'm now down to 4 chicks waiting to hatch. (plus the Polish crosses in there, which there are 3)

I'll be watching Illia. Hoping hoping hoping they all hatch. Due on Mothers day. What could be more perfect.

My husband always calls me Mama hen since I spend so much time caring for my eggs and hatching chickies!
