The Great Wal-Mart Organic Eggs Experiment (Pics)

Whole Foods sells "Fertile" eggs, they might work. So the fertile eggs getting cold for an extended period doesn't kill the embryo? I thought the cold would kill them, they actually can hatch when they've been sitting in the supermarket??!

Oh Oh I'm watching too

I hatched eggs from my fridge that were placed there while on a close to 2 weeks or so vacation and then put in the incubator a week or so later. Lots of welsummer babies from those. DH likes his fridge cold, cold and the eggs came from only 2 hens laying and eggs were old to boot. Experiments are the funnest thing, you never know what will happen.

a link to that posting and chick pics https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=165621
those guys should not have hatched. Some of the eggs were from before my vacation

I've read that chilling the eggs before incubation might contribute to defects, but, I've also seen people on this forum hatch lots of healthy babies from refrigerated eggs! If a person keeps a relatively warm fridge, the eggs shouldn't suffer. I just had an 8 out of 10 hatch with shipped eggs that had been in my 45-50 degree little fridge for quite a few days. If a person keeps a fridge close to freezing temperatures... it makes me wonder. I mean, what they do with human embryos and stuff? They freeze 'em!

I stumbled onto a new source of eggs for hatching. My local feed store has fresh free range eggs for sale. I called the owner yesterday and asked him if they were fertile and he said yes. He is going to bring in the eggs laid yesterday for me to pick up today. For the price of $3 Ima gonna get me some hatching eggs. I don't know what kind but they are chickens!
