The Green Dragon Roost

Well, a bit of good news! We just had a winter storm roll thru, wind, rain and snow. It went on while I was at work. When I came home, the first thing I did was check the coop conditions. All the pine shavings inside the roost and nesting area are still dry (I closed up all the windows and doors last night)! Woohoo!
Of course, todays wind was nothing compared to the summer storms that roll thru here. But, the way I see it, the chickens may enjoy a little wetness when it's 100+ everyday for months.

The chicks turned 3 weeks last sunday. At 5 weeks, they will move outside. At that point, overnight temps will be in the mid 40's and daytime highs in the mid 70's. Right now, I have them at 70 in the brooder box (in the garage) and lowering that 1 degree/day. (I'm using an electric space heater in the garage with the thermometer in the brooder box and a ceramic heat bulb overhead.

How far away from that wall is your coop? From the pics it looks like the rain will go right down your coop and into your neighbors. lol

2 feet from the wall and thats an alley behind the wall, 5' past the wall is still my property. I'm good there.

I decided, the heck with it. I moved the girls out there this afternoon. They're 4 weeks now. It was a hoot watching them explore the run. For the next few nights, I have a 200w light in the coop. My daughter and I rounded them up and shut them in the coop for the night. We caught 14 of them easy, but the last girl was all running around "you can't catch me!!" It was funny.

Everyone is looking good this morning. I opened the door and so far no one has decided to come out yet. Of course, it's about 40˚f out there right now.
