Ok gun enthusiasts I need some advice to help me narrow down my field of research: what is the best 10 mm handgun if I am looking for a polymer frame?

My preference is the Grandpower P40L. Not a well known brand in the US but somewhat popular in the Eastern European IPSC scene. The extremely beefy chamber inspires a lot of confidence with full power 10mm rounds and the rotating barrel system helps to tame a bit of recoil. I carry mine in grizzly country and also shoot it at my club's bowling pin matches. Great gun, hasn't let me down yet. My only complaint is that the magazines come EXTREMELY tight. At first I could probably only jam 8 rounds out of 14 in them. Took several cycles of loading and unloading them to break in the spring to where I could fully load them.

Other than that, a lot of people are pretty fond of the M&P10. I think they're horrible ugly so I haven't gotten into 'em, but I believe they do have a fully supported chamber which gives them a leg up on the Glock 20/29/40 in my book. Of course you can pick up a KKM barrel for the Glocks, but spending 500$ on a gun just to immediately replace parts rubs me the wrong way.

Being more specific about what you want to use the gun for can go a long way towards getting better recommendations.

Essentially I want a lighter carry gun for black bears. I usually have my kids with me when I’m out in the woods so a shotgun is too much. I usually end up having to carry the little one. Ideally I want to be able to stop a bear, not just scare it off. If I stop it I can also eat it 😆 So a good bear hunting gun that doubles as general defense (because trespassers are another issue) would be ideal.

I was looking at the Glock but came across the same issues you mentioned. My husband likes working on guns but I don’t want to buy one that needs $$ out of the gate either.

If I lived somewhere that only had black bears and no grizz, I would personally just stick with my usual 9mm with 147gr XTPs. But if you want lighter weight, there's also a shorter barreled version of the P40L just called the P40.

Number one requirement for a gun: Reliability.
