Wanted to post a little joy here.

Meet Derp. He is the happiest chicken.

Long story short, we ordered some Freedom Rangers from our local chick shop (meat intention) and after getting them in the brooder, I didn't think this one was going to make it. I noticed the crossed beak right away.... upon further inspection, I saw the little one only had one eye and that side of the head looked sunken in. We made sure he was eating, checking crop regularly and observing.

He's 7 weeks old now and has completely captured our hearts. When we go to feed and water, he runs right up to us. When we open the gate for free range, he's the first one out. I carry him around the property with me and he clucks happily. We've never had a more engaged and loving chicken. Surprise, we have a new pet.

All joyful feelings aside, if anyone has suggestions on providing the best life for him, please share. I know we need to clip his beak a bit soon, but am nervous to do so!

And please share your story of your happiest chicken!!!

Derp sounds like a sweetie :love

I've never had a cross beak but others will probably be along that can share their experiences. In the meantime, there is this article from the Learning Center you may find of interest:

Thank you so much! What a beautiful article! I feel so much more comfortable filing, very relieved to hear this is the best option!

Raising chickens has brought so much joy to our lives. Yes, there is heart ache too, but the joy overwhelms it. Backyard Chickens, and the wonderful here like yourself, has been the most encouraging and accepting place to be. We've prompted family and friends to raise there own and always send them here first. Many of our birds have been adopted and rescued, some in better condition than others. The guidance and advice here has taught us how to provide for them in the special ways they need.

Thank you:jumpy
