We've had chickens for 8 years now. I've learned so much through this process and never in a million years did I ever think I'd get so attached to my girls and roos. Being a chicken mama isn't easy. Chickens are "a lot" of work. Just when you think you've seen or experienced it all, something new pops up. I've had so many laughs and gotten so much enjoyment from my beautiful birds. We have 22 birds which includes two roos. One coop is larger birds, brahmas and jersey giants. The other coop is bantams which are mainly silkies. Over the 8 years we've lost some to illness and just old age. I still shed tears when I lose one of my girls. Lucy is my most recent that is getting old. She's 7 and is going through the stage of letting go. She has been one of my favorites and she gave me good conversation and snuggles. I'm going to miss her so much. I've attached a photo of her when she was about a year old. My advice to folks out there...chickens can make your life so awesome but just keep in mind all the difficulties you can endure with it, like sickness, injuries and age. BUT.....if you don't mind that stuff then I say it's all worth it. These girls are our pets. We don't raise to eat them. I know some folks do and that's ok....it just isn't for us. I never realized just how smart they are and how loving they can be. All God's creatures are important.
