I just picked off the already broken bits of shell, and tore the membrane to the edges of the hole (the original hole in the membrane was the size and shape of a sesame seed).

I found a nice loud chick video, played it, and watched the beak tip. Didn't move more than it had been (breathing). So I enlarged the hole a little, just enough to see. Does this look like it's ready, or do the veins need to retreat more?

Hard to see for sure, but I'd say wait a bit more...

I'll just go back to helping put the living room back together then (painted--incubator got moved to the desk in the dining room--much easier to take pics when you can have the flashlight farther away!)

Don't mess with it if there are veins. It will bleed like crazy because it still has circulation. They will recede on their own.
