The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Jimmy has raised most all of the lines through the years so I believe he has the most knowledge on the different lines.

Thank you for the link. I found the RIR Experience page to be very helpful. I noticed he didn't mention anything about the Underwood line from Hutchinson, but did mention Trish Dusil's birds, which they both got directly from Underwood. So i am assuming they are the same? From reading the about different lines of Rhode Island Reds it seems that every line has its pros and cons, you just have to pick what matters to you.

I agree. My birds are descendants of the Reese line and I believe with any line you will get exceptional birds and some just nice birds. I do my best to put the best quality females with the best males. I got a nice male from Matt last year that was the last one he had for sale so he was not a top pick but the chicks that were hatched from him were great with nice long wide bodies.
Here is that male with the older girls.

This is another male I hatched out from birds I got from Matt a few years ago. Unfortunately somehow he cut his comb between the middle points. I took him to a show before he cut his comb and he got a champion. The color is not good in this picture.

Very nice birds. I would love to get some from that line someday. I haven't seen any for sale posts by Matt here, and from what I understand he doesn't ship birds, only local pickup. I live in NJ so it is a shame i do not live closer. They look like great birds.

Quote: Matt usually takes some of his birds to shows pre-sold but you will need to contact him (BYC = Matt1616) to make arrangements. I don't know if he has any more birds for sale but if he doesn't he may be able to direct you to someone who may have the same line for sale.

Yeah, the thing is i don't live near him so the birds will have to be shipped. I am just assuming he doesn't ship chicks i guess, but most people I've seen don't ship or only ship hatching eggs. Although on JimsPetsandPoultry, he did mention Matt sent him some from Alabama to PA. Which isn't too off from where i am (NJ). Maybe in the warmer months i can see if he would ship some.

Picked up 2 breeding pairs from Sgribble this past week. They are settling in nicely and responding well to the new home. Can't wait to start breeding these.
I have learned so much this past 6 months thanks to this website and the breeders that contribute the wealth of knowledge they have.

The trip up to Steve's pens was worth it, just for the knowledge and history he has about this beautiful breed, I was fortunate that he was close by, otherwise I would have had a harder time at getting myself established.
Here are a few pictures of my boys and girls.

Hi Chris and anyone else who knows and would like to assist:

Could you please recommend a few hatcheries who carry something most akin to this vintage Rhode Island Red?

I read Cackle's comment regarding how close they can get to the standard and the differential therein.

We are looking for 200 to 250 Rhode Island Red female chicks and 25 roosters

This is for near term food needs for a thriving eco-village of about 100 people.

For longer term I would like to begin a Breeding flock of Heritage Rhode Island Reds.

We are in Southern Arizona and are raising the birds as much as possible on table and garden scraps and the micro life in our compost piles.

Others are doing this successfully and eliminating grain altogether from the production bird's diet. Like producing birds were fed before the grain-boom of World War II I hear.

Exmaples of this if you are interested...
Geoff Lawton and Company....

Karl Hammer at Vermont Compost Company been rocking this for long time http://vermontcompost.com/

Any advice on purchasing Rhode Island Breeder Stock and 200+ female chicks and 20 roosters?

Thank you so much.

Not very. Hatcheries don't have standard bred birds such as the Reds you see on this page. Cackle has production reds, non-standard birds. It's what their customers get. Here's a video from Cackle of their "breeding pen". LOL

Just how much selection do think goes into making these birds, under such mass breeding? Virtually Zip.
