The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Does anyone have any idea for a cheap and easy coop for a couple birds? Im setting up an old dog kennel for some extra birds I have and need some place to go for the night and roost. All the coops I'm looking at are either cheap quality or expensive.

There's lots of threads on BYC with photos and such and folks who have thrown together stuff from scrap basically. This thread has a very small, target audience and numerically limited participation. You'd get a lot more responses on some of those other threads, to be honest.

The Red should have it's legs in the middle of it's body. Not backward, making the bird front end heavy and not forward, requiring the bird to elevate the front and neck, resulting in a "rainy day" backline.

This photo of this K without it's tail is a good example to see the legs and shanks being positioned smack in the middle. The tail does not count on the center of position or station of the bird. When I first started with Reds, my eye couldn't always "see" that the tail isn't part of the deal. Far too many poor Reds are relying on the tail to provide the back half of the presentation. So, for that alone, thanks for posting this "ugly" photo, as it actually teaches a lot.

The thighs are also pretty clearly seen. On some birds, the shanks appear to come right out of the body. This fella is wearing "pants" as they say.

Alright, thanks. I'm thinking of doing just a simple lean to type design with a sloped roof and vents at the top of the taller side. I have a lot of problems with frostbite and I just want a coop where all the moisture can escape but not get in too easily. Luckily this is against the side of the barn so it acts as a natural wind and rain barrier.

Where there is a will there is a way. Again, good luck and have fun...

Thanks!

Stunning! What a nice tail.

Thank you. I'll show her again in a few weeks when it is in fully. It's fair. There is a pencil thin, I mean fine point pen thin, red outline her tail feathers, but that's the best I could do this year. She'll be shown, but MUCH more important to me, personally, is her breeding future.
