The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

It's a slow night on the thread, so I think I'll post my weekly video of my reds. They're 19 weeks old now, and I'm starting to see some slight bulking up on the cockerels. Their backs aren't quite as pinched as they were a week ago, and I'm confident they'll look much better in another week or two...

Joey, your chicks are growing beautifully. I started moving birds around but still have to sort them out. I have my Brown Leghorns in with RIR chicks. I know this is not the Leghorn thread, but my Leghorn's which I thought were Light Brown Leghorns actually are Dark Brown Leghorns. I saw some Light Brown chicks the other day and they looked different than mine did and then someone sent me come chick pictures of their Dark Browns and they looked exactly like my chicks. Since I have all pullets I'm going to look for a Dark Brown Male.

She wouldn't hold still when I was trying to take her picture so I put her in a small cage.

Thanks, Ms. Alieda. They are definitely coming along nicely!

Not sure how much difference there is between the dark and light leghorns, but I'm not surprised you had to cage your BLH to take a photo... they're typically a flighty breed. My one and only BLH has finally settled down now that she (slightly) trusts me. I can't get too close to her, but at least she doesn't fly to the other side of the pen anymore. If I move slow and steady, she'll let me walk fairly close beside her. I'd like to have a few more.... they're fantastic egg layers! In fact, in addition to using a red cockerel and BR hen to make BSL, I'm considering breeding my BLH so I can add some RIR/BLH pullets to my laying pen as well... but my main focus is and will be in breeding reds.

That isnt a dark or a light brown. Im not sure what color that is. She is way too light for a dark brown. When i get time i will take a pic of my darks. I guess it depends on the strains of leghorns because my darks are just as calm as these reds that this thread is about

My Rhode Island Reds and Whites are my main breeds but I do like the Leghorns. My White Leghorns are very flighty but I don't know how my browns will be. First I'll have to determine if they are really Brown Leghorns. I may just have to wait and see if they lay white eggs. They are quite dark in color. They are neatly indistinguishable from my RIRs.in color.

If anyone is interested in hatching eggs in the spring 2017, put you name on our list and you will be notified when Hatching Eggs are available. Please go to the following link and add your name to the list and as soon as we have done some test hatches and eggs available, you will be notified. We do test hatches prior to shipping to check the fertility rate and to ensure that the eggs we ship will hopefully have a good hatch rate

I thought the bird in the picture looked pretty red, but wasn't sure if it was the lighting. How old is she? Looking at her legs and wattles, she looks old enough to have yellow streaks in her hackles. Just my thoughts...

For whatever reasons I haven't been able to sign into my facebook accounts. For anyone interested in hatching eggs in the spring 2017 for Single Comb Rhode Island Red (Reese/Mohawk line) and Rose Comb Rhode Island White hatching eggs, please go to the following link and sign up and as soon as we have done some test hatches and determine that the eggs should have a very good hatch rate, we will notify everyone on our list who is interested in hatching eggs.

I'm moving birds around and getting them sorted out for the next breeding season as well as maintenance on the coops and pens too. I'll be glad when the weather starts getting a little cooler. The days here are still in the upper 80's and lower 90's.

I don't have a video, but here are a few quick shots when I got home. I am getting tails :) Four pullets and two cockerels. Last pair of pullets pictured is a repeat of two from above.
