The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Im not too sure. If i do i will let you know. Wish i wouldve known a week sooner. Coulda sent 1 to the show this weekend. The farthest south i will make it this year is the cape fear show in north Carolina.

I did well at the show. No champions but all got Best of Breed, Reserve Breed, Best Varity. I'm happy with that. With the molt on I didn't take my prior champs as they were looking rather shabby from their molts.

Congrats. This time of the year all my birds(Not RIRs) are all trying to grow back feathers after molting, they all look like junk now, but hey, at least everyone else is going through the same thing.

I wish I had known too. Mine are single comb but the judge at the show who raises Rose Combs said it would be ok to breed a Rose Comb to my Single Comb Browns and I would get both Single Comb amd Rose Comb chicks. Once in a great while my RC RIW's will produce a Single Comb. I had one male that turned out to be a Single Comb in this years hatch.

Quote: I have some dark brown pullets. I'm looking for a male for them.

I hope someday to be a breeder of Brown and White Leghorns. I am striving for show quality so it will be awhile and I'm not getting any younger. I know this isn't a Leghorn thread so in the future I will make sure I post in the appropriate forum thread.

Amen to that!. I'm right there with ya Sister. I don't have any experience breeding yet but I jumped in with both feet. I just ordered a Sportsman 1502 a few minutes ago. I really caught the bug bad a while back and ever since I raised those first chicks I knew right off I wanted to be a breeder one day and help maintain quality birds as close to the SOP as I could. Maintaining heritage chickens is right up there in importance with maintaining heirloom vegetable seeds which I'm also heavily involved in. The threat of those things being lost is very real.

Where can I get some heritage rode island reds? I don't show I just want some in my flock.
I'm not sure where you live but I believe Dick Horstman will have chicks available at the end of December. Here's his website: http://horstmanspoultry.com/home.html. I'm pretty sure he ships but you'll want to check to be sure. Are you wanting to breed them? If so you might want to consider at least attending shows because you can learn an awful lot there. Also just in case you might be interested, you might want to take a look at the Rhode Island Red Club of America. I joined very recently and everyone I met so far has been extremely helpful and informative. I wish I joined when I first became interested in poultry.

I am in Northeastern Nebraska. Ive never heard of a chicken show. The only shows around here are 4-H shows at the county fair. I just want some for no other reason than I just want some. I do plan to breed but not for profit. Just for replacements. The heritage are suppose to be bigger and more hardy than the modern Rode Island red.

@cmom ... birds turned 6 months old today. Sonny's boy is starting to fill in (meat and feathers) and looking pretty good. He has a bit of a hump in his back in this picture, but most all of them look like this when they're inside the coop...
