What do you guys think of this cockerel?
He has nice top-line, good strong neck & a good head. To my eye he appears shorter in body length than he should be. Some of that comes from his not being as quared off in the front as he should be. He also doesn't have as much tail as I'm used to seeing on a cockerel.

Thank You, This is a cockerel off Don Nelson's line, He is about 5 months old

Hadn't heard that Gary Underwood didn't have birds anymore. When I read this I did some math & realized it was 10 or 12 years ago that I last talked to him at Columbus. Time flies. That's a shame. It was a great strain of birds.
Hey Bill,
A really good friend of mine talks with Trish Dusil ( her last name is probably spelled wrong), this is the lady that had the Underwood line. I got chicks from her this past spring but only one pullet made it. Anyway, my friend talked with her just a week or so ago and said that she got rid of all her RIR's. I can't guarantee this, it came from someone else. I didn't talk to her personally.

You got her name spelled correctly. Trish is a really good friend of mine. She is who I got my Reds from. She did sell everything except her Welsummers. My most recent quad came from her August 23. I got her best Rose Comb cock and hen as well as two Single Comb hens. I also have a quad of Single Combs from her from last year along with 2 extra cocks.

Show him again in about 3 months I bet you he will look just good and have a little better comments (not that all were bad) but SOMETIMES can be premature when dealing with these heritage type birds. (MATURITY) is a BIG BIG word when dealing with these guys. I've seen it time and again 3 mo. old birds that look like "velociraptor babies" turn out to be some fine looking dudes by 8 mo. to 1 yr olds. The pullets seem to come on a little sooner(usually by POL) 6 to 8 mo. they are all they can be, some may still gain in size but you will see what they are made of by then. The cockerels do take a little while longer (generally).

Oh yeah I have to say I have 2 of those styro-jobber-doers and hatch lots of eggs from them but you are right they do take a little bit of monitoring/overseeing they are not self maintianing or automated enough just to throw the eggs in there and walk away for 21 days. Nope you have to be there for them several times a day IF you want good results, which I would do even if I had a 800 dollar one as I'm a mechanic by trade and I do know this, ALL machines break down and quit, its why I have a job, LOL

This looked like a Don Nelson bird when I saw it. This is the color of a true Heritage Red if you want to look at what might be or not be. They need to be the color of a Bing Cherry. When you go the Grocery Store and they have Cherrys from Washington State look at the Bing Cherrys that is a good color for the surface of the bird on a male. The beaks are almost black when they are that dark or horn colored and their leg color is loaded with horn color as well.

You are looking for a male that is twice as long as he is deep. You can see a brick shape in his body.

The line that Gary Underwood had may be at the end of the road. If you have them that is good. Keep them pure and try to keep them going for Garys Sake. I have not talked to him in four years on the phone. I consider him my first mentor in Reds. I stayed at his house for 8 hours and all we talked was reds. He is the one who told me about ticking in the neck feathers and how his dad was a sticker on that color on his females.

He was a retired Biology Teacher and knows genetics like no Buddy's business. Thats good but does not make you a great breeder. Something to talk about any way.

I was looking at the five half and halfs that I am bordering. They are so dark I cant see them in the dark in the pens when I feed them early in the moaning.

They are half Illinois and half Florida line that I am feeding till breeding season. Should start laying soon. The red bantams are really looking good.

New York Reds that male you sent me is ready for a photo shoot. He is got a finish on him like none I have ever seen. He has a son that's coming along very much like him and will show him at the big December show in Pensacola . Trying to line up judges right now. Its cold here I got a sweater on. Going to have to put a sweater on Mr. Silkie Ralph. Hes shaking in his boots out side. Maybe I need to build a new pen for him and put a heater in it.

Nice pictures of the black chickens. Someone said why not learn how to breed with them for type excellent idea. There are a few breeds out there that are very nice and need help.

Any names you can come up with?

Looks like we got our North Carolina friend  some help with his extra large fowl. Looks like we found some for a few new folks in North Carolina now we got to educate them on how to breed them. Its time also to look at buying some good incubators so these eggs will have a chance to hatch if you get eggs in the mail. Any suggestions on the models to buy for the beginner.

I would like to thank Bob, Gina, and Greg for the help in re-homing most of my birds. As some of you already know I am having health issues that prevent me from properly caring for the amount of birds that I now have. I really don't want to give any up, but you know sometimes you have to do what you have to do. I have raised these since they were hatched and they are part of the family...lol. It's best for the birds and the strain that someone else carry on with them. I will only be keeping 7 for my sanity and to raise a few to share until my health improves. Dr.'s now say I'm turning around but it could be a year or two before I'm somewhat normal as I'm gonna get.

I also want to apologize to everyone that I didn't respond to PM's or email. I got swamped and there was no way I could reply to all of you. I surely hope I didn't insult anyone by not responding to their particular inquiry.

For anyone needing Heritage Reds eggs hatched that live in my area just let me know. I will be glad to do it for you. I have a Dickey incubator and a Dickey hatcher. I also have a smaller wine cooler incubator that I built that works great. There will be no charge for doing this. All I ask is that you pick up the chicks immediately after hatching . If you want me to start them for a few days just furnish the feed and supplies. They are hatched and brooded inside my home.

I still want to do my part in keeping the Heritage RIR's alive and well for future generations. Thanks everyone.

I hope everything turns out ok for you. I'm sorry to hear of your health problems. As someone who is going through a lot of health problems myself, I wish you all the best. And I understand perfectly about haveing to cut back, I've had to do that myself. If there is anything I can do, just let me know.
