Thats it on my view. Look at what you are buying and I dont think there is any Heritage R I Reds being sold on ebay. I would not buy any Reds from Ebay as your chances are they will not be what this tread is about.

My first eggs I hatched were off of Ebay. The Don Nelson line is the first Heritage Reds I began with and bought off of Ebay from Dave Bosworth. There are several "mahogany" colored Red eggs for sell on there but it pays to do your homework when you bid on them. There are a lot of RIR eggs on Ebay but they look like Production Reds in the photos. Interesting to see who has what sometimes.
And Luckypickens birds did start with Production Reds I found her on BYC and she says so on the comments there.

I have seen a few birds from the pickens line. they look to be mixed between hatchery and Heritage. According to the ads i have seen, they claim to have purebred Heritage reds and they are not.
I guess they sell more by claiming so, and people buy before researching what a true Heritage bird is supposed to be.

As I've said several times before, you can't cheat people who do their homework. There are 2 phrases, "Heritage" & "Show Quality" that become more annoying every day as they have no real meaning. If people can call Reds like the ones we're talking about now [Ryan Strain} "Heritage" & people believe it & buy the birds what use is the term.
Along the same line there are the name-droppers. At a recent show a woman was looking at smoe SC Reds I had for sale. She informed me that she too had Don Nelson strain Reds. I asked here who she got them from & she said she got them directly from Don. I told her I hadn't seen Don lately & asked her if she had. She said no, that she hadn't seen him in a couple of years. Don was standing right next to me when I asked the question.

Heritage chickens are dear to my heart. I have but one chicken in my coop at the moment. A rescue production RIR. Unlike any I have ever owned. Truly docile and gentle bird. A pet I would like to get a few production hens for.

I stumbled into this thread and remembered how much I loved standard bred and heritage poultry from the time my children were young and had their own birds and showed them at the local county fair in open class.
We had a Duane Urch bantam RIR roo that my ten year old daughter entered in 1996. The bag of Nutrena feed was a premium he won. He took best bantam and best of show that year. A gorgeous little guy that dropped dead the day after that fair. We never got the chance to breed him. He was much loved and missed.

After all these years I think about starting over again with quality breeding of LF heritage RIR birds. Do we have any breeders in Washington state or do I need to order chicks through the mail?

Nice bantam male with your daughter back in 1996. As someone who was born and raised in Washington and raised my first Reds there I can tell you there is no one left who is a very good breeder of Single Comb Large Fowl Reds. In fact the whole west coast has gone down hill from the old days. They may have some and they got some from Mr. Smith and some from Mr. Green and crossed them. You dont want that kind of stuff. There are a few who have got good strains of Large Fowl Reds and a few who have good Rose Comb Large Fowl Reds.

You need to find someone who will share ten two week old started chicks with you and ship them to you overnight express.

From that start you will get I am sure one good male and one good female. Hopefully they are from two different family's. You may have a male and female from each family that is just a little weaker and they could be used and have two family's. From these four birds you could hatch next year 30 to 40 chicks and you are off to the races.

I just meet tonight at a chicken meeting for our December Show in Pensacola Florida a fellow who want to get started in Rhode Island Reds. I am going to bring him a trio of birds for breeding. He will be my third local partner and I will couch him and help him with this trio. This is what I call networking. So with him and another person who lives about 20 miles from me we together will have three family's. I have another good line breed by a master breeder and a keen eye in Arkansas. So we can exchange birds with each other every three to five years for fresh new blood if we need it.

What you need is to find a person who will not only share birds with you but be your partner and help you learn how to breed this line for color and share birds with them every five years. Be for the post office scare a few years ago on shipping I called this networking.

I actually just ordered 6 R.C. Bantam RIR's from Duane Urch. I'm hoping to go to Champion Row with them. And yes Duane Urch still has RIR's.
