The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Oh my goodness Jim, aren't they pretty. Congrats on a great hatch. I am even more excited now. I can not wait until mine hatch. Penny
Well Penny, one thing for sure, if you don't get a pretty good hatch we can't blame it on the seller. mrheinz77 did a good job on packing the eggs that I got so I figure he did the same with yours and I've told you every thing that I do so if yours don't do okay, it must be those southern mail carriers. ha,ha.
There are so many variables that can come into play when incubating these eggs, especially when they are shipped.
I wish you the best of luck and will be waiting to hear next week how yours did.
Jim

Jeff that bird is 18" tall - 24" long and around 9" inches at the wide part of the back.

I will have to get him in that pen and get another picture of him when he is out of molt. That picture I took today (top picture) does him no justice at all.

Hey Jiff,
Thank you,
Don't let those hens fool you on there size, there averaging 7 lbs.
That rooster that your talking about was it a single or rose comb?

This is "No Toe" He is a big boy but in a molt and looks like crap. (hi is 8 pounds in the picture but when not in molt he will be 9.5 lbs)

This is him when not in molt.

Boy Chris, I hope mine look like this one day soon. I'd bet if you put a level on his back that the bubble wouldn't be moving very much at all.

I let you on to a little trick of mine, I never breed a bird that doesn't have a good back.
When I got started with Reds about 10 years ago I culled heavy for type, I culled I don't know how many chicks and birds for what I would call poor backs but over time the backs got longer, more level and I had to less culling for poor backs.

Just to show how strong the genetics for back length and levelness is here is a cross bred son of his, this is a 1/2 Rhode Island Red 1/2 Wheaten American Game cross that I sell as Brazen-RSL's and are a egg laying cross but look at the back on this bird and note that American Game is known to have a short back with a upright stance.

Before even reading all the post my eyes kept going to the picture. I saw that straight long length to that boy.
You are doing a fine job Chris. Just another tid bit that I have to ad to my bag of tricks. lol
There is so much to learn with these guys/gals.

Hi all. I've been a lurker in this thread, trying to learn as much as possible about these beautiful birds while waiting for mine that are coming in January. I searched the thread for birds from Duane Urch to see what I should expect when getting mine. I'm a little concerned about under color in his birds. But then I see some really nice ones that he has, it's kind of hit and miss. I have yet to see one of his Bantam R.C. because that is what I ordered. All I've seen are his Bantam S.C. and R.C. LF. Has anyone seen his Bantam R.C., and if so, were they high enough quality to start a breeding program with?

If I remember right Urch and Bill Karcher from Eagle Nest Poultry have about the same line of bantam rose comb reds and if so they should be decent birds or at least were when I saw them last.

Good news RIR folks....my daughter's batam RIR pullet won the youth show at the Ohio Nationals!!! This from over 1,500 birds entered in the youth competition, so we are absolutely thrilled!
