Could be either one. How could anyone here answer that question with the information available?

Let me rephrase that question. Has anyone looking in hatchery catalogs seen any RC RIRs? That would possibly answer my question since a lot of RIRs for sale around my state are hatchery.

Thanks for the info. What really started me wondering was someone in my State is advertising RC RIRs and my curiosity made me ask the question. I personally prefer my SC RIRs from the Don Nelson line and I do have a few Cherry Eggers for my layers. If this person has the RC RIRs I was thinking maybe it would be a source for some of the people on this thread looking for RCs.

Not to mention 320+ eggs a year...

Looks just like the ones I had in my layer flock before I decided to get serious about the reds. One thing I will say is that from 72 hens, I was getting 65 - 68 eggs a day and selling them and the girls paid for all their own feed and the eggs were so large that most of them would not fit in a jumbo egg carton and be able to close the lid good. IF eggs are what you are looking for, these can't be beat. IF it is meat and saving the RIR breed then we must go with the long, dark, handsome guys and those beautiful girls that go along with them. lol
I will not knock those birds because for egg production they can't be beat.

I have three of them too. They are great chickens and are in my layer flock.

Ideal called them RIRs, so not Sex linked hybrids. Definitely not Heritage. I have a suspicion that the Heritage RIRs will out lay the Cherry eggers over their life time. Cherry eggers slow down much faster and sometimes have more health problems according to my research.

100 % agreed. They do slow down drastically after the second season. I only kept mine for two seasons then replaced them. Over the lifespan I agree with you that the good ole RIR's would probably outlay them but when I was selling eggs, I had to have something that was laying good every year. lol Anyway, I have no regrets on what I'm doing now.

Got a phone call today from a fellow who wants the old fashion R I Reds but wants good good egg production.

Lets say we go with ten cherry eggers. We will get about 250 eggs average per year. The question is how long do you want to keep them.??

Most commercial egg farms that have them in their cages get rid of them at the end of their laying cycle or maybe they might let them molt and lay on their second year.

Then she is off to the slaughter house and we see her in the meat department at Safeway and we buy her as a stoing hen.

So what the difference in a cherry egger and a Heritage Rhode Island Red like I use to have. My girls will live to be maybe eight years old or more. Chickens can live very long lives.

I had to Cochin scrub hens as a boy that lived 15 years and they set and hatched eggs for me till they died.

Hatchery cherry eggers normally start to blow out as they get older or have ruptured oval ducks I have been told. That is why in the old days say 1950s if you had 500 Rhode Island Red hens and 500 cherry eggers. You would end up with more profit per square foot with Rhode Island Reds as you would have less deaths. Yes the Cherry Eggers would win more egg laying contest using the RI Red name which was cheating but they got away with it. The smart farmers went with Harold Tompkins Rhode Island Reds which got about 200 egg per year average.\\So after telling this to my new friend he decided to get ten Mohawk Started chicks in Jan or Feb from us down here. He will be very happy with them and he will have good egg production, lots of meat to eat from the birds he does not wish to keep for breeders or layers and they are so pretty to look at. He has no desire to show them just likes old fashion thinks on his hobby farm. He is also going to teach me how to grow Heirloom plants in my garden and maybe share some old seeds with me.

I in return will teach him how to make these Reds lay ten to twenty more eggs per year to their limit. Nice trade and all end up winners.

Who else wants some of these old fashion R I Reds??????????????????
