The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Remember we are not back yard chicken collectors we are breeders. We still have shows to go to and then we put the breeders in the pens after the first of the year. Then we start hatching. So Jan or Feb should be about right all the way to May.

For those who just want these birds to up grade from producing Reds to Standard Breed Rhode Island Reds there is no hurry March and April in the North is just fine. Send me a personnel message and then I will get your name and address and phone number and when they are getting ready we will contact you. Its so very simple. We hatch the chicks let them get about ten days to two weeks old and put say ten in a small single nest shipping box and ship them out over night express to your post office. Takes about 24 hours. You pick up the chicks at about 8 am at the post office put them in a nice warm brooder box with feed and water and you are off with a nice strain of Rhode Island Reds. No eggs to fool with no sad disappointments that they dont hatch. Why dont we ship eggs. We can ship 12 eggs to you and you hatch three chicks or we can put the same eggs in our incubator and hatch 8 or 10 chicks so we dont waist these eggs which are hard to come buy. We do not flock mate like hatcheries do we have pedigreed matings like all the good breeders do.

Hope this is made clear. We are breeding forward not backwards.

If interested send me a message.

Grand Sire

2012 Cockerel

I was at Matt 1616 farm last night and was looking at Mr. Mohawk or a Cockerel Matt Raised this year of his pure Illinois strain Reds he got two years ago from Greg Chamness. This is the male that won last weekend or so in Florida that was Grand Champion of one of the two shows. The judge said it was the best R I Red he ever handled. I agree he is equal to the male I handled thirty years ago at Mr. Reese's house which was the foundation of my strain as I breed from his six year old sister and her three sons.

The picture above is the grand father of this young cockerel which was sent to me by Greg Chamness a few years ago. How this all turned out about ten or so years ago I sent a Four H junior a male to show and his brother and when the males where about five years old he got out of chickens and Greg bought both males. Greg asked me how should I mate this male and I said do you have any of my old hens left that you got from me. He said I have three they are about six to eight years old. Mate him to these old females and try to get some chicks. He got about 15 chicks and the above male the grand father of this great cockerel of Matts was the best and he also got four killer pullets. From this cross of these very old old birds we got this cockerel in 2012 season and he also has a sister that I think is going to be equal to him in Quality.

So for those who wonder what True Heritage Rhode Island Reds are suppose to look like this is the color, the brick long body flat top line shape you are suppose to have to be called Rhode Island Reds. Matt also has a great male that is the brother to this male that is also very good and a half brother that has some of the best color I have seen on my old large fowl Reds in years. He also should have the brick long shape body as this cockerel but is about five weeks younger. It was just a joy for me to see my old strain of large fowl Reds back down here in the South and we will return the old traits and genes of this 100 year old strain of Mrs. Donald Donaldson's- E W Reese line in years to come.

Congratulations Matt job well done.
Great story Bob. Can you post any other pictures of the 2012 Champ, out of the cage? I really enjoy seeing these quality birds. Dan

Bobby

Boy I know it "ain't it though"

Him and Jeremy both this year walked in and just took down the house and brought it all home with them.

And too Bobby, you been taking names and cleaning up house too a few times this year, HUH?

Glad to be amongst such great showers and breeders it nice to know where/who to goto for information from the ones with the credentials to back it up. LOL

I love this thread. It was a pleasure to meet Matt at the Central Florida Poultry Show. His birds were next to mine and I could really see the difference. I have been breeding my Heritage RIR's (descendants of the Reese line) for about 2 years now so I still have a ways to go. I am hoping to get some birds from Matt at the Lake City show (Florida Sunshine Classic) in January. They certainly are beautiful birds.
