The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

I would also like to know if anyone has any extended Horstman( Tim Bowles) line RC reds chicks/eggs that i could buy to add new blood to my current flock. I would buy from horstman again, buy i want a few birds that have been SOP bred a few generations out from my current flock. Thanks for any info.

What is the St Ives line?

are talking about crossing lines of Rhode Island Reds?

If you are not showing them or breeding them to a standard should be no problem.

Yes, he wants to cross lines of RC Reds and keep breeding to the SOP. I may not have the exact name of his line correct.
Mary St ives or something like that.

I got my first heritage large fowl standard bred ..sop..rhode island red ...egg today.....whoo hoo....as was just discussed she was much older than the hatchery production reds....at 8 months...as they started at 5 1/2 months...however her egg was not their typical pullet egg it was large 1 7/8 oz...now if the others will hurry up ..let the hatching begin...:)

Ronnie
That's good news!
That means I need to keep an eye out for my pullets to kick in. I have never gotten a pullet size egg from this line. They just start laying large from the beginning.

Actually Bob, you suggested that I keep my line more or less pure, but I want to show them. Since my birds are descendants of the Reese line I am hopefully getting some birds from Matt.

Right now, on the Wyandotte thread, people have been discussing fertilization issues with cocks and cockerels in Wyandottes caused by the rose comb. I was wondering if anyone has found any issues similar to this in rose comb RIR's?

I keep hearing here, on BYC, about the well known problem of fertility in rose combed breeds. I've never heard about this problem anywhere else. I've bred Wyandotte Bantams, Hamburgs in both bantam & large fowl & Rosecomb Bantams for years & have never noticed their fertility being any worse than any of my other breeds.
Now I understand that my personal experience does not constitue a scientifically valid sample but I've not heard other breeders of rose combed birds talk of fertility problems either. There's a well known breeder of Rosecomb Bantams here in NY who hatches 1,000 or mre Black Rosecombs a year. His fertility can't be too bad.

I have a local RIR breed wanting to cross my Horstman line Reds with his St. Ives? line. I suggested this might be a mistake, but someone correct me if i am wrong.

To what end? Why is this cross being considered? If it's to be done in a controlled fashion with a goal in mind that's one thing; if it's for the "new blood" so many people feel the need to introduce then I wouldn't. The absolute best way to screw up a breeding program is to indescriminately cross strains.
