I have a question. Most of what I have read, discussed breeding as though you received a breeding pair/trio or two. I'm hatching eggs, so I don't own the breeding pair. To be successful do I need to hatch or obtain a rooster or hens from the same line or can I breed from the ones that hatch? Th eggs appear to be from different hen, as some are obvious pullet eggs and others are now.

Thank You,
Mike

Thanks for the comment Jeff. I'm really pleased with these Jeff. It doesn't seem like to many have the Underwood line. Maybe I can get a good start with them next year.

Maybe some others can give you a better answer but I can say that most of my young birds came from eggs that I got in and hatched myself and I doubt very much if they all came from the same hen. I think you would be okay for a few years to just use what you have.

Hi Mike. I am sure some of the experienced breeders will post and help you out, but I am in the same boat as you, having 5 RIR that are just turning 6 weeks old, that I hatched out. I have 1 RC and 4 SC. I most likely have at least 2 males, possibly 3, and 3 pullets, possibly only 2. One of my males is a RC so that is pretty much guiding me on my first breeding.

My plan, so far, is to take my RC and put him over my pullets, that way I will get both RC and SC chicks, I am going to work towards having a separate flock of each. I will then take the best ones and breed back to the parents. From there I will start culling hard and breeding back.

I will keep the other males until they mature and decide their future then. Having only 5 chicks to start with will be a little harder and take a little longer to build my flocks, but it is a start, and I am most grateful for that.

Hi delisha. How's your hatch doing?

Yes I am going to keep the males for now. Since my females are all SC when I breed them with the RC I will get a mix of both RC and SC, at least that is my understanding of it. Then I can breed any of the RC pullets from that cross back to their father and get more RC. I can then take the best SC male from that hatch and breed back to the SC mother and that will give me a start on having 2 separate flocks, 1 RC and 1 SC.

That is the plan based on my inexperienced understanding of how the RC and SC crosses work.

Any of you have the e-mail address for the RIR club secretary? Need to get club memberships updated for the coming year and the RIR club is one we don't have yet.

Just PM it to me if you have it.
