The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

I still have my RC Reds I am looking to rehome if anyone in the area is interested. I will not ship.

These are the two adult roosters and there are 2 adult hens and 6 pullets. You can see some of the pullets in the picture. These are Adrian Rademacher line birds. I am starting to think I will keep them if I do not find a serious breeder to take them. I will not split them up--buyer must take all. I also have one young cockerel.

I am looking for RC HRIR's, but I'm in Florida. I will get some in the fall.

I am SO thrilled with the way my Underwood RC are maturing.
Big boned, correct, and so very sweet. I can't believe how docile they are.
Many thanks to Jim, who has been helping me offline determine sex and has been so willing to answer my many questions.

I have 20 chicks and it appears that 2 are SC (one of each sex).
This works out great as the SC female appears to be quite nice so I will likely use her under one of my nicest two Rhodebar roos to attempt to begin my breeding improvement of my Rhodebar line. She will create some nice F1 females to put back under my other roo to pull the autosexing back in. I won't loose the SC on the Rhodebars if this goes as planned. That said... I have no qualms about creating RC Rhodebars... and will likely do that on purpose at some point regardless.

Of the remaining 18 who are RC, at least 7 are pullets... that leaves me with a LOT of cockerels to choose from. I will be picking the brains of everyone here this fall and winter to try to determine who the keepers are.

In the meantime... here are two of my babies... thought I'd share.

This post will be for the folks (like me) that got chicks from Gary Underwood this spring. My older RC and SC came from eggs that I hatched from Jim Heinz. His birds came from Trish Dusil who got them from Gary a few years ago. To my understanding, Trish and Gary worked close together with her breeding pens. These birds look pretty good, (JMO) and would be quite a few generations from the chicks received from Gary this year. Penny (melroseladi on BYC) has a few of the SC also from Jim and one RC roo, not sure on hens). Jim Heinz still has some of these also. We may be able to help you folks out down the road to keep the same lines going without inbreeding to close. Once crossed like this, you should be pretty well set for quite a few years. I am so thankful to both Jim Heinz and Gary Underwood for the start with these birds from this old line. It is a little more work keeping everything separate but in the long run the combs will be a whole lot better without crossing the two varieties if we can do this. lol Believe me, I don't claim to be a genetic person like some on here are but using common sense sometimes works just as well. I'm not trying to push eggs or chicks from myself or anyone else but just thought that I would throw this out there.
Jim Heinz contact information is on my web site owners/breeders page if you want to contact him. He's a very nice person to deal with. Birds pictured below are the Underwood line I hatched from his eggs. These pics were when the birds were 6 - 7 months old. The last picture (RC hen) was just taken today. She is 8 months now. These birds seem to have pretty good flat long backs. Hens have good length to bodies, nice tail set, good wing carriage, good under color etc. If some of the more old time breeders, judges on here etc see bad faults in these birds, PLEASE let me know. I don't see to many bad faults in them. lol

SC RC seem just when I snap the pic, they move. lol

I can hardly wait to have birds like those running around here. It will be 6 - 7 months to wait. On Monday I met with Jim Heinz and picked up 14 lil underwoods for myself. I know this is the wrong time of year to be raising chicks for ideal growth, but the situation presented itself and I jumped on it. I have to agree with you that Jim is a very nice person to deal with. Everyone keep posting your photos and comments and asking questions......now more than ever I have so very much to learn. Thanks again Jim Heinz and everyone else on the HRIR thread for helping all us new people out.

I have 1 RC cockerel (Tanker) and his 4 SC girls that were hatched out from eggs from Mr Heinz. Tanker is mixed RC/SC so he does have hollow spots on his comb BUT he has good type, has not shown any aggressive behavior, and is funny as all get out. All 5 free-range and are locked up at night. My smallest girl has been laying 5-6 eggs per week in the same spot. My other girls are still hiding their eggs so not sure what their egg production is.

I have 11 SC pullets and 7 SC cockerels that I got directly from Gary. I think they are 23 weeks now. Pullets all free range and the cockerels share a pen with my Rhodebar cockerel who is close to their age. I will be thinning out my cockerels and am in the process of deciding which cockerels I will be keeping. I wish I could keep them all but that just isn't feasible for me this year.

I also have 1 RC pullet that I hatched from eggs from Mr Heinz. The PO was not kind to that shipment of eggs and she was the only one that hatched. She is a little younger then my SC pullets. I will be pairing her up with Tanker and hopefully will be able to expand my RC flock next year. She is already redder in the face then my SC pullets so I think she will be laying soon. I will not be hatching any eggs from Tanker and my SC pullets. I really want to work on getting a nice comb on my RC flock.

I could help somebody out with a trio of SC for local pickup if anybody is in need. I will be in a better position to help others next year.

Penny

Jim, I am very fond of birds with extended keels and see it in these. Long wide backs good color. The RC cockerel looks very brick. Good looking birds sir. Ron

I'll tell you one thing Ron, we sure do agree on that (long keel) and boy do most of these girls have them. lol These birds really seem to mature pretty quickly. Thanks so much for your comment.
