The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Personally I am really impressed with my Rose Combs as well as my pullets that are SC from a RC sire. They were fast to mature and are really a good size with long broad backs. I am really excited to move forward on my RC flock.

So far my RC pullet's comb is looking good and I think that putting Tanker over her will start to give me improved combs. I am not going to put Tanker over any SC's (unless something horrific happens where it would be necessary). I am thinking that putting Tanker over SC's would only cause the combs to become worse.

I was thinking last night at work What If Idea. What if you took this male with this classic Rose Comb look long flat top line and crossed him on one of your Matt 1616 best females and started a new line of Rose Combs. I personnel would like five to ten chicks from such a cross to start something with a friend of mine in Florida Anthony. So Jimmy latter next spring if you have plenty of chicks for yourself maybe you could do this for me. I will send you a single nest box and have the little rose combs down here to raise. I know the big fault on the early rose combs is hollow combs, but on a female it will not show up as bad. Could pull off a upset some day and get best of breed with a Rose Comb that would really be neat. Got to give Gary Underwood Credit this is a wonderful bird. Who would think that thirty years ago when he crossed a Rose Comb Bantam onto his Single Comb large fowl he would end up with a bird like this. He is the most cleaver Master Breeder of Reds I ever interviewed. I stayed at his home overnight one February about 25 years ago when I lived in Wisconsin for a short term.
Jimmy and I had this same discussion about a year to year and half ago except it was crossing the Horstman RCs with the Nelson stock. I think the Underwood RCs over either the Mohawks or the Nelsons would be super duper.

Good morning Bob,
After reading your previous post (#4594) you really had my mind spinning. All the thoughts were really running wild. lol
First off I have to say that my birds from Matt are still pretty young. Gosh, I haven't even thought about them laying yet. IF, I get a nice hen out of this group, I would be more then willing to do this for you next year. I am new to the RC's but learning pretty quickly with them. I have RC eggs in the bator right now from these guys and may even get something better then this boy. The really nice thing about these is that they mature very quick and within 6 - 7 months from hatch they are big enough to tell somewhat of what they are going to be. The chicks that will be hatching from these eggs are from both RC parents so the combs should be improving already. These are not real bad, just a couple small hollow spots but seem to be filling in quite nicely. I don't worry at all on being able to do this as far as the RC's go, I just have to wait until the girls from Matt start to lay. You know, they aren't real fast about this. lol Not saying that in a wrong way. It is just that they don't mature as quick as my Underwood's.

Jeff,
After much consideration, here are my thoughts on the crossing of these birds. First off, I would rather work on my Underwood's for now and get the really good RC first. I absolutely love the size, the really broad backs, length of backs, color, and broad heads on this line. I only have the two older cock birds ( 8 months ) right now. I really don't want to get to much on my plate and not be able to do any good with any of my plans. lol The biggest thing that I like about this line better then any of the others that I have is this. They mature very quickly so that means that I don't have to wait for a 1 - 1 1/2 years to see what I've gotten. These birds turned 8 months old on the 10th of July and I've already hatched one group of chicks from them and have eggs in the bator right now. The girls start to lay around 23 - 26 weeks they are really a nice long bodied bird almost all of them have good color, nice spacing in tails ( upside down V ) very quiet disposition. I think for myself (and this is definitely just my own opinion) IF I was ever to cross these boys with any of my girls that I have right now it would have to be the Nelson line. NOW, here's my reasoning for this. The Nelson girls are very long bodied, they mature almost as quick as the Underwood's, they are good layers, they have good black in the tails. Am I saying that Matt's birds won't fit this bill, NOOOO, It is only that I haven't had the opportunity to own any of Matt's birds as adults yet. lol Matt and Bob would be able to tell more on this line then me. I can say this much. I would not cross the other Mohawk line with them for myself nor would I cross with the Horstman line. As of right now, my Nelson and Underwood birds are what I'm concentrating on. In a few more months when they get a little older then I will be really concentrating on my Matt's Reese birds. I will definitely try to do what I can for Bob to get him a start with these to work with but for now, I'd rather work on getting my Underwood birds to the pure RC and SC stage. I'm going to try and keep a couple families of each variety so I don't have to cross them for a long time if ever. Bob can work on the RC Mohawk line then if I want some later, I will hit him up for some. ha,ha,ha. Pretty sneaky huh? Geez, I'm having enough FUN working with what I have without starting to work on new lines. lol

I would not recommend this to any one else as this is a hair razing project that Anthony and I can do. It would just be fun to get a rose comb on a Mohawk that's all. The only large rose combs I saw that turned me on in the past two years is the males Aaron had that he got from Radamker two years ago. Those where long bodied good looking boys. I would love to have one of those males on say one of Matts females. However, he had bad luck hatching and could not get one chick from him to raise this year. This male you have Jimmy worth the long back is special. When you make a cross you must make sure the frame or body is in the zone that you have right now. So this guy on a right female next April should work fine. I am sure you will have pictures of some of these Matt birds and I will see one or two that will catch my eye. So for right now lets stick with the ones you all have don't think about making a cross that's stupid for a beginner. Stick with the Underwood line I think and maybe two to four more of you will have these next year. Great Chickens and true true to the breed. bob

Bob,
You notice I said " IF " lol I would rather do exactly what you said. I'll do the cross, ONCE, then you and your friend can go on with it and see if you get it down pat. lol I just continue to plug away with what I have and try try again to improve on each generation. lol
I will work with you or anyone else the best that I can. I for one will stick to what you and William Post has told me from the very beginning. "DON'T CROSS THESE LINES." You guys that have worked with these forever can do that kind of work but for me, I do not have all the knowledge on the different lines at this point in my career. ha,ha. I catch so many little things that you and others say that may not seem important to some then I stick it in a little folder in the back of my mind. I have a page on my site that I keep just for my own personal use ( not published to public ) that I stick some of this stuff. lol
Oh, Just wanted to say also that I can't afford to many more hair raising projects because the hair is getting thinner and thinner. Oh my gosh. I might have to start collecting the chick down and gluing it on.

I would like to give it a try. I would like to cross the RC with my Reese/Mohawk. I think it would be interesting and exciting. I am vintage, retired and love my birds. Who know how may years I have left. I am in my late 60's and my DH in his mid 70's. I want to enjoy my birds while I still can.
