The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Jimmy do you remember Smokey and the Bandit? Jackie Gleason use to say once and a while in tthat show this.

WOOF

That's all I can say WOOF.

Man these are killer Rose Combs.

In regards to helping the beginners doesn't make sense to put 120 eggs in the incubator and pray to God they will hatch and then pick ten nice chicks and put in one of these boxes and ship to a new bee or beginner than putting 24 eggs in a box and have a poor hatch. If you have a good incubator like you do
the chances are very high if they are fertile they will hatch. Under these limited number of bird we have this year we do not need to playing around with this egg game that so many like to get into on this big web site. Its ok for hatchery chickens but with these rare Standard H birds its foolish. I have some ideas how to ship eggs and will experiment with them this year but its all in the care from the post office to the buyers home. To inconsistent on how they are treated on their journey to the buyers home.

The chicks up in Washington state look great. If you saw the male that Ron posted that I talked about hopefully they are related. His strain is getting better and better and I can tell you Ricky would be so proud of his hard work caring on his legacy. I think looking at all these Large Fowl Reds we have been posting we are in the best shape of improving this breed this year in the past five to ten years. We just got to try to pick the best birds with the best type and try to move in baby steps upward. Just wish we could do this with our Red Bantams. Boy are they in the Toilet in my view. Keep fixing your minds eye on those flat top lines and don't ever forget the BRICK.

My buddy Jim and I have been chatting about this shipping eggs fiasco that just happens so darn often. Won't bore you with the details, but lost, I mean LOST boxes for days, scrambled egg insides even though the very best methods are used, hot trucks, freezing trucks, rough handling, dumped on conveyor belts, sent in jet cargo bays, and who knows what else.

Now, let's get down to brass tacks. Those with experience. Here is the scenario. Gonna send someone 9 chicks, 5 weeks old. Best price on a "good enough" shipping box? Bought in a package of less than 8. Who's gonna buy 30 shipping boxes, certainly not me.

Cost to ship? Current prices, as I understand there's been a rate spike. So what does a breeder have in the box and postage to send out 8 or 9 chicks?

Real experience please. Shoot, any of us can speculate.

Just the facts, as Joe Friday used to say.

WOW, I'm all bug eyed. I've been searching to see if I could find that original picture. I quit, lol I'm not 100% sure but I do remember seeing that shot before and I'm almost certain that it is a Nelson cock bird. If I run across it I'll let you know who posted it originally. I know I have it somewhere.
As for my birds, I've almost come to the conclusion that I'm not sending any more eggs out. It is just to big of a hassle with them getting to the buyer in good shape. As long as my PO allows me, I will try to help out with chicks because it seems it is easier to get them to the buyer in better shape. I know it is more costly but just like a friend of mine and I were discussing, if a person is really wanting to get into these birds, the cost is well worth it. It isn't that the seller will be making any money off them but the shipping cost will be more for the buyer. Myself, I would rather pay for a box of chicks or a few juveniles the pay cost of a box of eggs and only get one or two maybe three eggs hatch out of the bunch. Look what it cost for the electric to run the incubators and the time involved in incubating and end up with nothing. That is just throwing our money and eggs away. Just my thoughts.
I just took a few shots of my birds from Matt and a couple of the RC boys that are the parent stock of any/all my RC Underwood's. Oh my Bob, I'm sure not patting myself on the back but these two boys are some of the nicest looking RC Reds that I've seen in a long time. I'm going to post these two boys shots on here but the others will be on my site tomorrow. I will work on the site after I come home from church this evening.
The first picture is one of the boys, picture 2 & 3 are of the other boy. Not much difference. The first boy is just a hair shorter in height and he carries his tail just a tad higher. The second and third picture, this boy is a shade taller and most of the time carries his tail just a tad lower. They truly are almost identical. These boys will be 10 months old on the 10 of September. The stance of the bird sure does make a difference in what the bird really looks like. lol

Gorgeous Reds yet again. I totally hear you on the egg thing to, had never done it in 20 years, tried it this year to get into breeds that I wanted and couldn't find anywhere else (patience is NOT one of my virtues), disaster, too expensive, too unreliable, give me actual birds any day.

If my memory is correct.
Nest Box light. 6 shipped to me with shipping included = $16.50 each
Shipping to west coast $50-$60 (ten 14 day old chicks)
Less distance less shipping.

oooooooo - very handsome RC boy!

If you will be shipping chicks I wouldn't mind if you'd send some this way next year...seriously!

If you're in the southern half of PA or plan to be at a show there, I'd even make the trip to pick up.

Either would be much better than shipping all the way from IL if I can get on Mr. Underwood's waiting list.

Yes Bob, I remember that simple Jackie Gleason in Smokey and The Bandit. Watched it many times. lol
Thanks for the comment.
As for the shipping of eggs/chicks, I shipped two Brahmas last year that were almost full grown two boxes and it cost me right around $90.00. I will see what i can find out and post on here.
Jim

Well, as more of us discuss shipping chicks this coming season, as opposed to eggs, it would be wise to prepare for what to expect monetarily. Laying in some shipping boxes is itself an expense. Predicting what the postage will cost is difficult, but similar shipments made recently by some of the folks here would provide some guidance anyhow.

Just guessing, but $180-$200 for a box of 10 chicks, all told, might seem stiff to some folks. This is going to take some educating of the buyers.

There is also the hassle of complying with various State regs on shipping live birds. Eggs can be shipped 'incognito' but not live birds.

Since I live here, I know Virginia is a PITA for anything other than day old chicks and so few people are willing to go through the paperwork hassle (no cost other than time). Hawaii is another tough state. At the very least its a good idea to have NPIP certification (if you don't already have it) unless you just don't care about dealing with the fussy states. Which of course makes us residents of said states very sad...

How to locate a shipping box:
Let’s play some examples on how to get a box to a breeder who you would like to get some started chicks from this coming spring. They hardest part is getting a breeder to take the time out of their busy schedule to share some of his good birds with you. Let’s just use my friend Mr. Weaver in Tennessee who has my old strain of White Rock large fowl is willing to help you. You live in Vermont and want ten started chicks in March. Mr. Weaver says I don’t have any boxes and I am not going to order three or five or fifteen so you send me a box I will send you the chicks. DONE DEAL I will get you a box to your post office and to you.
Now we got to put our heads together and come up to get a single nest box to ship him so he can ship t you the chicks. We can go to a poultry show and a suppler will have a box for sale and sell it to us for $10. You then send it to Mr. Weaver. Your cost about $6 to get it to him.
Next you have a friend who is going to a poultry show and they buy the box and ship it to him you then send the friend the money to reimburse them. Next you contact maybe me or a another breeder and we may have a box and we can ship it to Mr. Weaver and you reimbursement us.
Next, just go out and order three boxes from Horizon for $60 send one box to the breeder keep the other two boxes keep them for next year when you may ship some chicks to someone or help a friend out needing a box.
If a breeder plans on selling maybe 30 chicks he should be able to order the three boxes then charge the buyer for the cost of the box and shipping about $20.
Hope this helps some of you come up with ideas.
There is a pigeon place
http://www.jedds.com/Cart.bok?cart_id=36416 who sells single boxes. I am ordering a box from them to put five Red Bantams in them and ship back to me from Arkansas for breeding season next spring. I have used them before and very good company. Horizon the owners name is George and he is a prince I have dealt with him for over 20 years. If you want some hard to find Standard Breed H. Poultry you will figure out how to get a box to a breeder don’t let something as minor as that get in you down. Now let’s get out there and locate some sellers who can send us some chicks this spring and get stated. Nuff said.
