My RIRs ( Ron Fogle, birds) are now 5 mos. old, and I think their molt is over. They are not the easiest to photograph and capture their magnificent, deep colors. Contrary to their reputation of being not so gentle, I find them to be very calm, sweet birds who gets along with everyone. They have always been one of my very favorite breed.
I did have a beautiful quad; but, unfortunately, 4 wks. ago, a Bobcat killed my lovely pullet, and my beloved Jubilee Orp. head rooster. He died fighting to save his flock. It was a horrific experience which I shall never forget, and I miss both my birds very much.
Now I have a trio which I love very much, and appreciate their beauty, and wonderful temperament.

They look very nice Lual!
They will look even better in a month or so too.
The reputation that these birds have gotten over the years were not the birds that you have. If you want to find the bad reputation, get yourself some hatchery RIR or the Production Red and you will see the ornery side of them They can get down right mean. I've had them over past years and they were as good as a watch dog. So many including myself have these HRIR of different lines and I have yet to get a mean one. I can't speak for everyone but I haven't heard much if any on here say about them being mean.My RIRs ( Ron Fogle, birds) are now 5 mos. old, and I think their molt is over. Hey Matt I was smiling at the lil' above average male height to weight ratio he posted for the 6 ft. mark/200lbs. that extra 30 is probly right in specs on the allowed percentage of overage, reckon? We La-yers seem to have the over problem more than the under those crawfish pies "ain't" too bad on us but the rice and gravies are. My buddy calls the gravy "gravity" LOL and it likes to hang right around the middle too(sticks to your ribs) LOL 'cest si bon huh Chris and J/K with yaFor Bob and anyone else interested. I agree 100%, these HRIRs are great but those hatchery RIRs are down right mean, might wait for a year or two then one day they turn on you like a rabid dog and you have to beat them off unless the shotgun is handy and that's it.The reputation that these birds have gotten over the years were not the birds that you have. The APA newsletter says Mississippi now has a poultry club, the website is www.mspoultryshowclub.org.When it the one in Jackson, MS. this fall? Is there also a website for it?
If your RIRs are production reds they'll never look like the HRIRs on here unless you are crossing the HRIRs onto your flock then it is going to take you years to "maybe" get it perfected and probably not then. JMO, not trying to knock you down we have to start somewhere and I also have production reds but as they die off will replace them with HRIRs. It cost money to feed them nowadays.I REALLY REALLY like the look of this black and white pic. I love blocky looking chickens, shorter and blocky. I hope I don't offend anyone by saying that since I know you guys are really into what you do here. But I just like them. I had originally planned on keeping #1 and 7 of my RIR's but when I got to looking at them I decided on #1 and 13 after I chatted with you all on here. I don't know IF I chose well or not since I am a beginner. BUT they did have the square-ish back of them all. Can't compare them to y'alls but gotta start learning this so I figured I might as well start trying now.![]()
