I have been waiting for cooler weather to evaluate my keepers for the winter. I have noticed that some of the legs are more yellow than others, and they have all been on the same feed with a large weedy run to graze and a couple of times a week I let them loose and eat in the yard and gardens. The pullet pic shows the horn color on the beak. I looked for the darker streak up the legs and quite a few of them have the line. These birds were hatched in april so they are around 6 months old in these pics. These are Gary Underwood RC's.

I just wanted to let you know that a good breeder has indeed been able to fulfill our needs, and to thank you for your part in helping me to find him. The road to finding some good quality RIR’s has been a long one, but with the few that we have now, and the birds we will be getting from this nice breeder , I think we are well on our way. I also wanted to take a moment to let you know that I love your web page, and that I have found a wealth of useful information throughout its pages over the last year or so. Hopefully we can catch up at a show one day and you can impart some Red wisdom on me and my daughter first hand!

This is just one of many emails or personal messages I get per month. Never Never give up on a person who asks for eggs in Sept. You don't have to be rude to them and you have to dig and find out their needs. I got them fixed up with a great alabaster to Rhode Island Reds and they are getting some young birds his extras and every buddy is a winner. So if you want eggs or chicks in Sept this is pretty imposable but there are many who have good extra birds which will make good show birds or breeders.

Bob I have 1 younger rooster available if you know someone. He is about 23-24 weeks old. Not a perfect show quality yet, too young to say for sure one way or another.

Got another reply a few hours ago. Wants hatching eggs has sitting hens no incubator. So when the broody hens go broody when ever that happens maybe March or April. Will find a nice breeder willing to ship say 12 to 18 eggs to this person. He does not ship chicks anymore. He has to drive 100 miles trip to a post office for ten chicks. Not fair to him and the cost and time is stupid.

But he said he may ship some eggs which is nice. IN this case he does not live more than about 300 miles from this beginner who want to convert to the Real Rhode Island Reds and can be shipped UPS ground or two Day Priority Mail. It would be fun to ship half the eggs each method to see which has the best hatch.

So many ways to help the beginners out. If they just be patient with us. NO EGGS FOLKS in October so if you read my post good breeders do not have their females and males in breeding pens yet. Hopefully we can start putting or thinking about putting the breeders in the pens about Thanksgiving turning on the lights to 15 hours total light per day and the eggs or chicks will be popping out around New Years eve. If we do this this gives the large fowl a head start for the fall shows for the kids as they have to have mature birds sometimes by August and September.

I respectfully beg to differ with this statement.

While I don't have RIR yet, I know others who like me, also select for the late/early laying trait and set up fall breeding pens. Any nice breeding hen that is laying fertile eggs, without lights, at this time and later, gets to carry her genes forward as those are the eggs I hatch. I just set 20 eggs from a breeding pen of three hens and one rooster (all third generation) that were also hatched from late eggs. Of course, we do tend to have more temperate weather in my area of Virginia until mid-late November but still get freezing temps by December. Northern hemisphere daylight hours are pretty much the same as more northern climes.

Hello, Red Bird Lovers!

I am putting together a small mixed backyard flock of layer chickens to enjoy in my retirement. I'd like to have similar varieties of chickens to the ones I remember my grandparents and great-grandparents having in their flocks. My favorite breed was the one I have not yet been able to find.

I remember Grandma having a pair of big, old,nosy single comb Rhode Island Reds that followed me around the yard, chattering away. They were sweet birds that seemed just enormous to me. They were Grandma's favorites, and she would hold long 'conversations' with them as she worked in the garden. The hatchery Rhode Island Reds aren't the same; they are smaller and just don't have the big personalities that I recall.

I want a pair of nice Heirloom Rhode Island Red girls for my backyard flock. I don't need show birds or breeders. Culled birds with minor show flaws would suit me fine. I live in Indianapolis, Indiana and my brother is fixing up a nice coop and run for me. Would anyone not so very far away have a pair of sweet-natured pullets I could purchase?

welcome. There might be some in the columbus area. I'm not sure of the line though. We saw them at the fair and wow they looked awesome. maybe call the 4H leader to get a name or two of the RIR winners. Then come back here to check on the greatness of the line. I would be sure to find out the line first.
I'm close to you but I don't have any extra girls.
There are great breeders here but they are a ways from Indy.

I am in southern Illinois and will be culling my RC RIR's that were hatched in late april. I would be willing to meet you half way. Pm me if you are interested in the rosecomb type. They are big pretty birds too.
One of the young roosters has a single comb and he is due to be culled. I would give him away to anyone who wants him.
