The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Sorry to just barge in here!

Trying to find trios or quads of SC and RC. I live a bit south of Indianapolis and would venture on a little road trip to pick-up. I was in off and on contact with Bob about getting these when I had things ready and, well, now I am! I was waiting until I had a few things straightened out before I I rounded up a few of my heritage breeds that I will devote to for the next few decades!

I have an extra rooster that I'm planning to process in a week or two. I'm just a bit south of Indy. Sorry I don't have any hens to spare. I only have 3 hens. if you are interested, send me a message. The rooster is from Ron's line and is just over 32 weeks old.

Wish you were closer. I have extra pullets and cockerels. It would be more than a little road trip to here, I'm afraid.

While I'm here, Hatched this guy last year around this time. The only one that survived the shipping, incubation, and brooding phases. I hate shipped eggs, as it seems to me, the chicks are less hardy in the younger stages, but that's a discussion for somewhere else.

This picture is 1.5 months ago. I would love some input on him. He's currently just a mixed flock protector, but I was wondering if you experienced Red folks see any potential.

I'm just diving into the Reds, so my eyes are not yet trained.

How far are you from Tempe? I may be able to swing a trip that way in the next month. I need a RIR cockerel that harkens back to Reese/Mohawk, and would love to bring home a pair/trio of ROs as well.

i'm going to preface my opinion with i'm an amateur so I hope the pros will chime in here. your cock in this picture (pose and angle) he seems to be from hatchery stock.. tall and slender built tapers a bit to the rear short back tail angle too high not enough chest on him ..a better pose might show him much better and one from right over the top.. he is a really handsome bird looks to be in great condition well feathered shows a nice sheen like he is in top condition. hows his temperament ? my neighbor has some that look like this and for what he wants them for they are great birds.. not trying to be harsh on your bird but he doesn't look like a lot of pictures ive seen on this thread..

In my "knows nothing" opinion, I feel mostly the same way about him. Short back, shallow keel. He typically carries his tail between 40&45 degrees. Hatchery stock, not 100%, but I feel like there's some, if not a lot of, hatchery blood in there, even though it's claimed there is not by the person it came from. His temperament is amazing, not like hatchery stock Reds that I've known. I don't expect a good critique for this bird at all, more of a "this is wrong for this reason" for when I'm going to get my real Reds, since this is a bird I can put my hands on. I don't know if that makes any sense, but I can read critiques on pictures of other birds all day, and it won't help me as much as a critique on a bird I own that I can go pick up and evaluate faults that are pointed out on him specifically...
